New project started this morning... been on the books for a while! First little #prototype done in #freecad to test a few ideas out. First morning working in V1.01 which is proving really solid so far.
Finally had the time to take some of the topics from my blog post about design for #3Dprinting and make them into a proper #FreeCAD addon!
You can download "FusedFilamentDesign" from the FreeCAD addon manager.
Also check it out here: https://github.com/rahix/FusedFilamentDesign
(This addon also integrates the macros I mentioned here a few weeks ago)
#freecad WHY is it even a possibility that a pad of a simple sketch in a separate body would somehow just include a "phantom" copy of the feature the sketch is attached to. how does this even happen?!
(yes this is fixed by attaching to a ShapeBinder, not directly to a different body, but like.. why is this the failure mode? maybe just don't allow direct attaching if it's going to produce jank)
One of the locking levers for the convertible top vanished between last week and today. The good news is that even though this is a 50 year old car I can get a new one for $13. The bad news is it takes a week to ship. I thought about milling one from brass but #freecad is a pretty quick way to model something good enough. I told prusaslicer to use 5 layers for wall thickness in hopes it would be strong enough to last until the new one arrives.
Gosh it's #freecadfriday once again! What are you lovely people up to with #FreeCAD?
Something for the weekend? I'm super pleased to have just blogged with the 1st issue of #SOURCE. SOURCE is an idea for where to place articles I'd like to write but that are to difficult for my brilliant paid clients to home. SOURCE is opensource, free (pay as you feel) and I'd LOVE it if you shared my first experimental issue on Computational Fluid Dynamics with @FreeCAD that's on this blog. Ta.

update on the multi SBC compute cluster
got it most of the way done, the networking and rack mounting is complete, just need to figure out a proper power supply solution
its so cool :))
If #FreeCAD had a #SuperTuxKart racer, what would it be or look like?
Alright, M3, M4, M5, M6, and M8 parameters for the rib thread macro all look good after testing.
The same parameters can be used for both vertical and horizontal orientation. For horizontal rib threads, ensure they are rotated so there is no unsupported rib floating at the top.
Next up: I wrote a #FreeCAD macro for rib thread forming, rule R5.4 from my Design for 3D-Printing guide.
https://github.com/rahix/FreeCAD-Macros/tree/main/RibThreads
I didn't even have time to verify all the thread sizes yet (because I'm not home and no mobile 3D-printer yet), so if someone wants to help out here, please do :)
@FreeCAD
A wheel turning device / roller for my #velomobiles, so I can lubricate or clean the chain more easy. I still have to add motor, gears and some other parts to the model.
Hey! It's #FreeCADFriday once again! Show us what you're working on in #FreeCAD #CAD #OpenSource
Darren has lost his day job and decided to go full in helping the #FreeCAD community with his great tutorials. This is the time for you to think about supporting him.
Just created a #FreeCAD macro to automatically generate fully parametric geometry for the R3.5 overhanging counterbore trick from my Design for 3D-Printing guide. Been doing this manually way too often!

Here's one from the blog archive. Making #3Dprinted vice jaws from pop/soda bottle filament!

If you dig my random blog make me prioritise it more buy hitting that 'kofi' button on there and buying me a coffee! #3dprint #recycle #freecad #tools
On this rainy Saturday, I’ve been #3dprinting a lot of radius gauges to verify dimensions on a part I’m trying to model in #freecad. Of course, I’ve had to model the larger gauges in FreeCAD as well because those sizes aren’t as readily available on the various printing sites.
Now that I've moved over here to Hachyderm, I suppose it's time for a new introduction.
I'm a mechanical engineer and cyclist that is interested in just about everything and constantly learning. My project list is forever growing, but most of it is taken care of by #FreeCAD, #octoprint, #3dPrinting, #python, #obsidian, and a variety of other #foss tools.
I'm also a #bluegrass and #ska musician, playing #guitar, #UprightBass, and #mandolin. I never said I was great, but I have a lot of fun making music.
I like to try and help people wherever I can because a lot of people have helped me over the years. The #fediverse is full of wonderful people, and I've learned so much and had such positive interactions with people from all over the world since joining in 2022.
Let's keep it going!
