Apparently this time it’s a refinery fire in a California and the lower Canadian dollar that’s responsible. If Straya, &amp; frankly the rest of the world, was genuinely honestly doing all the serious shit needed NOW to decarbonise &amp; ameliorate, then seeking engineering solutions in flood zones like this would be ok. Knowing though that we &amp; most others are totes NOT seriously addressing the crisis, fuels [boom tish] my severe pessimism, coz eg, engineering designs need engineering assumptions [in this case including expected heights &amp; frequency of floods]. Such assumptions necessarily must be predicated on a certain "steady state" belief [plus safety margins thrown in]. That's all fine, IF we had reason to trust such assumptions. I do NOT trust them, simply coz there IS no steady state; humans are continuing to add more &amp; more CO2 &amp; CH4 to Gaia's atmosphere, thus more &amp; more raising the enthalpy, ergo the heating energy, ergo... yada yada. </p><p><a href="https://infosec.space/tags/ClimateCrisis" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ClimateCrisis</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/NonLinear" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>NonLinear</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/TippingPoints" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>TippingPoints</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/PositiveFeedbackLoops" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>PositiveFeedbackLoops</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/FossilFools" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>FossilFools</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/RenewableEnergy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RenewableEnergy</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/ChangeTheSystem" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ChangeTheSystem</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/StateCapture" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>StateCapture</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/RightToProtest" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RightToProtest</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/Biodiversity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Biodiversity</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/WeAreTotallyFscked" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WeAreTotallyFscked</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/Misanthropy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Misanthropy</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/Karma" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Karma</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/NativeForests" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>NativeForests</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/StopLoggingNativeForests" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>StopLoggingNativeForests</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/FsckCapitalism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>FsckCapitalism</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/CognitiveDissonance" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>CognitiveDissonance</span></a></p>

As I feared, it’s increasingly sounding like this trade war is going to provide cover for new pipelines, looser regulations and expanded fossil-fuel development. I understand the reasons why (fossils being the most profitable industry in the world and all) but it’s short-sighted in terms of the cost to the environment the future stability of our world.

It’s especially worrisome that we’re looking at shipping our oil out through arctic ports. That sounds to me like a recipe for ecological disaster.

I’ve also heard (usually Conservative) governments over the years, tout expanded fossil-fuel development as a way to ‘displace foreign oil imports’, however unless the plans include building out domestic refining capacity, all we’re doing is shipping out raw product only to re-import the refined fuels—which also happens to be a convenient accounting method of sidestepping responsibility for the carbon emissions that the refining process produces.

It’s beginning to look like the Carney Liberals are just as much in thrall to oil & gas as their predecessors. Possibly more-so. 🫤

“. . . despite a newly leaked government-funded report listing recommendations for how Alberta should reclaim its nearly 80,000 inactive wells.

The recommendations include creating companies backstopped by taxpayers that would acquire abandoned wells and use revenues from them to fund the cleanup.

It also recommends setting up an insurance fund financed by industry that is ultimately backstopped by the province.”

“According to the US Geological Survey, the basin off Greenland’s east coast alone contains 31 billion barrels of oil equivalent and west Greenland about half of that. If this was all recoverable, Greenland could become one of the world’s largest fossil fuel producers.”

Alberta’s total dependence on the US to purchase its oil is at the core of her government’s deference to the Tangerine Traitor. The’ve allowed themselves to become completely at the mercy of the US.

Remember when that ~$30B pipeline we all bought for them was supposed to open our oil up to other markets? How’s that working out?
