@fgntfg @tennoseremel As someone who uses XMPP as their only chat and calling medium, I beg to differ 😉

Also, people are now quitting #Telegram because of their AI bullshit. Like any #centralized platform, it was bound to abuse its users sooner or later. #Federated protocols like #XMPP are the only sensible option.

I suggest you come and rediscover XMPP. Check out some good clients and servers -

Inviting the #Fediverse to join another #Jabber / #XMPP channel I co-moderate - the #BlackLivesMatter channel! Another initiative by the wonderful @maskedwitch

You can join without a client or an account! Just visit - https://chat.queer-spark.org/#/guest?join=blm@conference.queer-spark.org

But for the best experience, I recommend using a proper client. The easiest way is to install Quicksy or Prāv, if you don’t mind using your phone number. Alternatively, install one or more of the following, and use them to register an account on conversations.im (see https://providers.xmpp.net or https://compliance.conversations.im/old for more server recommendations) -

…when you’re set up, open this link to join the channel! https://invite.joinjabber.org/#blm@conference.queer-spark.org?join

If you’re new to XMPP (e.g. coming from #WhatsApp #Matrix #IRC #Signal #Telegram #Discord etc), this guide has everything you need to get started - https://contrapunctus.codeberg.page/the-quick-and-easy-guide-to-xmpp.html

In the Everlasting search for clients and servers Federated, detached from corporate underlords, connected to the masses I learned about the following client server duo

Client: Delta Chat
Servers: Chat Mail servers

One thing that jumps immediately into attention, is the fact that when you download the client, select a server, you get a QR code

When you've configured your client, you will immediately notice that you do not need to enter a password for your client. The system is passwordless by default.

You do not need to enter a multi-factor authentication code it doesn't need it.

What you need to do is be careful with, is who you share your link with. Go and play with it, see if it something for you

Me and some #FreeSoftware friends are setting up a #Fediverse + cloud server aimed at getting #Indian users away from the mass surveillance, censorship, and disinformation of proprietary platforms.

Please let us know which services are important to you by filling out this 2-minute survey, so we can prioritize accordingly and estimate the costs.

@joannaholman
I believe that the #fediverse is perfectly positioned to be an environment for the good. The #federated nature of it is consistent with freedom of speech, Instance based moderation of toots, non profit and voluntary.

It is very much self-regulating, allowing each individual to decide what they see on their timeline. Individual can also swap instances based on their criteria until they find a ‘home’. Moreover, the ability to block out rogue instances which breach the rules (set up by each individual instances) ensure that such rogue or misbehaving instances don’t get all the oxygen they desperately seek.

In sum, the Fediverse is a healthy, evolving environment equiped to deal with the worst of social media’s harm. Just relax, engage, mute, block, petition your admins to block rogue instances, and enjoy ad-free and algorithmic targeting-free social interactions.

I’m a nube here, so happy to stand corrected.

@dgar Love the variety of synonyms for "died" 😆

Lessons to be learned -
• Boycott #proprietary software - use #FreedomRespecting software (a.k.a. #Libre / #OpenSource / #FreeSoftware) which is free of corporate control, and
• Boycott #centralized services - use #federated services so you aren't locked into one service.

#XMPP is still around, and thriving.

@jerger

Valid question! One I've really had to think about in the past.

First of all, I love the #codeberg mission and am a member of the association. We're on the same side.

However, I don't think #federated instances are the best solution to hosting the world's #OpenSource.

I think individuals (rather than organizations) should have the power to seed repos they care about and keep them online.

That is: I think the solution should be of a #peerToPeer nature, not of a #federated one.
