Building a "EU OS", a Linux distribution for the public sector, is another example of a repeating pattern.

Everybody throughout Europe talks about digital sovereignty, that we need to become independent, that Free Software is a great way of getting there, and at the end (almost nothing) happens.

Instead of simply starting to use all the great stuff out there, we start to build stuff because we tell ourselves that x, y, z is missing.

Let's get finally started! We will be surprised what's already possible. Gaps that might come up can be closed on the go.

💻🇪🇺ЄС готується відмовитися від #Windows на користь власної ОС #EUOS, заснованої на #Fedora Kinoite та середовищі KDE. Це рішення – не просто зміна софту, а стратегічний крок до цифрового суверенітету та підвищення безпеки.

Поки що ініціатива стосується лише невеликих і середніх державних установ із кількістю працівників до 1000 осіб. Але якщо експеримент виявиться успішним, можна очікувати масштабування.

Це серйозний удар по #Microsoft і натяк на можливий тренд для інших країн.

:linux: 🇪🇺 Trwają prace nad własną dystrybucją Linuksa dla Unii Europejskiej. Za stroną projektu:

"EU OS to Proof-of-Concept wdrożenia systemu operacyjnego #Linux opartego na #Fedora ze środowiskiem graficznym #KDE #Plasma w typowej organizacji sektora publicznego. Inne organizacje o podobnych lub mniej rygorystycznych wymaganiach również mogą czerpać wiedzę z tego Proof-of-Concept.

Pomimo nazwy, EU OS nie jest technicznie nowym systemem operacyjnym. Distrowatch wymienia obecnie ponad 250 systemów operacyjnych Linux ("dystrybucji"), a ich różne smaki, odmiany lub podwarianty nie są nawet wliczane. Wartość dodana EU OS jest inna:

- wspólny system operacyjny Linux jako baza dla wszystkich użytkowników EU OS z opcjami nakładania modyfikacji (warstwa krajowa, warstwa regionalna lub sektorowa, warstwa specyficzna dla organizacji)
- wspólne środowisko graficzne
- wspólna metoda zarządzania:
- użytkownikami i ich danymi
- oprogramowaniem
- urządzeniami"
