💾 4am AMD Xorg/Kernel Debugging 💾

Ongoing fun ongoes, so much so. This iteration receives triple output: tty video (Display Port), COM1 redirect via DB9 to laptop running minicom, COM2 to the usual BMC SoL terminal watched from ipmitool on adjacent laptop.

Coming up, rebooting into GENERIC-DEBUG kernel rebuilt with remote GDM (kgdb) access via the COM1 link to laptop.

I've checked the prices of some AMD Epyc cpus and come to the conclusion that, given enough donations, you would be better of having a CPU like

AMD PS755PBDAFWOF EPYC x86 CPU Processor Model 7551P (32c/64t 2.0GHz) 16 DDR4 DIMM Slots with up to 2TB RAM and 128 Lanes of PCIe 3

which costs only USD 269 at amazon. You will have 32cores and enough PCIe3 lanes to do the task properly. It's just 69 USD more in price

👾 SiH²O, TECs, AMD, PPC 👾

Have you ever used a 'thermo-electric cooler' (aka Peltier device)? Have you used one on an AMD Socket AM5, and not burned down the system or frozen cooling lines? If so, I'd love to hear experiences!

I'm considering the above on a hypothesis/PoC sorta basic, insofar as exploring the options for a potential application during restoration of my watercooled PowerMac G5 (4C PPC-970MP).

The last time I looked into TECs was at the start of the water-cooling wars in 1999... assumptions assume that the landscape is more efficient and less slap-together.

#AMD #EPYC 9755 Performance On The #Linux 6.11 & 6.12 Kernel
In many of the larger, real-world workloads there were minimal to small changes while in more of the micro-benchmarks and other focused areas there were some nice gains observed with Linux 6.11/6.12. With Linux 6.12 expected to be this year's LTS kernel version, it will find use by hyperscalers and other large organizations that tend to jump between the #LTS kernel versions.

www.phoronix.comAMD EPYC 9755 Performance On The Linux 6.11 & Linux 6.12 Kernels

The time when #INTEL dominated CPU performance are LONG gone.

First, raw data.

AMD EPYC 9755
128C/256T
12984 USD
amd.com/en/products/processors

INTEL XEON 6980p
128C/256T
17800 USD
ark.intel.com/content/www/us/e

Now ...

Recent comparison between 128C/256T offerings from both #AMD and #INTEL shows that #AMD CPU is 40% faster then #INTEL CPU.

Average power usage of both CPUs were VERY similar with 322W for #INTEL and 324W for #AMD.

Peak pwoer value is different and #AMD tops at 500W while #INTEL tops at 547W power.

But that is not end of #INTEL misery ... while #INTEL #XEON 6980p CPU costs $17800 - #AMD #EPYC 9755 CPU costs $12984.

That means that its price/performance ratio is multiplied by another 0.7 factor.

So TOTAL/REAL #AMD CPU price/performance ratio compared to the same #INTEL CPU is 70% better for #AMD.

#AMD Confirms #Zen5 #CPU Now Sampling: Turin "EPYC" & Strix "Ryzen" Launching In 2H 2024
AMD seems to be betting it all on #Datacenter in #2024 by accelerating their #EPYC CPU and Instinct #GPU roadmaps. On CPU side, AMD Zen 5 core architecture will play a big role which will be powering two major product families, the EPYC "Turin" and Ryzen "Strix". These two chips are said to be sampling to partners now and launch is expected sometime in the second half of this year.
