Maya Contreras writes for @damemagazine about how it’s time to listen to experts in disinformation, historians and economists. “We must center the voices who’ve consistently shown up for the party, promote new leaders that have a proven track record of winning elections, and understand that the consultants who knew how to win elections in the 1990s don’t understand how elections are won in the current environment,” Contreras writes. “We’ll need a plan to counter the right-wing echo chamber with our own robust media. That won’t be easy or cheap.”

@TheConversationUS one of the best articles I’ve ever seen on our tendency to trap ourselves into #echochambers and believe #FakeNews because it fits our world view, bolsters our us-vs-them, and fosters fear of “them”.

It even brings up a point that I’ve always used: growing up, one uncle filling me with conspiracy theories, and another setting me straight by telling me to look at what I see and experience in the real world

We create our own echo chambers, across all the platforms we use, by being highly exclusive in choosing which accounts to follow, mute, block etc. I try to avoid an echo chamber not by keeping a toe in a DataFarm, but by following widely and muting/ blocking minimally, and usually temporarily.

If only people who agree with everything you say on any topic are allowed to be in the thread, you CANNOT "curate" a following. Curating a following requires that people be able to have a variety of opinions expressed in a variety of conversations, among larger groups than merely their existing followers/following.

If the only "conversation" allowed is one that every little mini-Musk permits, then there is no longer any actual conversation. That's just another #EchoChamber.

Every conversation would become a monologue. Monologues do not allow for personal or account growth on anyone's part.

If you want to monologue, write in your blog. This is SOCIAL media.

@RollingStone the #ChristianNationalist #echochambers (like #foxnews and #youtube ) obviously stoke the fear that leads their lemmings to become violent, but how do you make them accountable? What law would make sense to punish the #media for bringing us to this point?

@stefan I'm not as interested in the "free and open" part (having been working with open source since the 90's).

For me, #mastodon 's appeal is that it's not driving people into #echoChambers to increase their readership.

@stux It's going to take a long time for people from the #twatterverse to realize that #cancelculture won't work here on #mastodon. If they don't like it, block it or mute it - #Mastodon isn't going to enforce their particular moralities or reinforce the walls on their cozy #echochambers. This is where the grown-ups are. Children should revert to the bird-site.
