"The DWP very quietly published a series of damning disability benefits related reports at 4pm on Friday 2 May, on the eve of a bank holiday and on a day when the news was dominated by the results of the local elections held the day before. Had it not been for the ever vigilant staff at Rightsnet spotting them, the documents would have undoubtedly sunk without trace." benefitsandwork.co.uk/news/dwp #DWP #DisabilityJustice

GOV.UKPathways to Work: Reforming Benefits and Support to Get Britain Working Green PaperThis consultation seeks views on the approaches government should consider around reform of the health and disability benefits system and employment support.

The #DWP claimed in a press release last month that there had been a “staggering 319% increase” in the number of working-age people on the health and disability element of #UC

But although there had been an increase – most likely caused by the impact of growing NHS waiting-lists and the Covid pandemic, among other factors – it was likely to be about 30 to 35 %, if comparing 2019-20 with 2023-24.

The 319% figure was quietly removed from the press release last week.

If it's like the Conservative plan, new UK policy will involve a massive increase in hiring of health professionals to do assessments for the #DWP in an effort to paper over the fact that the policy is likely to hurt vulnerable people.

Those health professionals will be coming from the same, limited, employment pool that the NHS gets its staff from. They could otherwise be delivering much needed actual health services.

Anyone who thinks the DWP will limit its (new) powers to directly remove money owed from benefits claimants bank accounts, and apply to have them banned from driving for two years for 'repeatedly' refusing to repay DWP money, to those who are claiming benefits fraudulently, has not been paying attention...

How long before the first un-paid carer is banned from driving making their ability to offer care for a loved one impossible?

I give it weeks....

The Guardian · DWP crackdown could see people banned from driving if welfare debts go unpaidBy Nadeem Badshah

TODAY IN THE HofC, DWP Minister Andrew Western emphasised that the proposed Fraud, Error and Debt Bill “will not give #DWP access to any bank accounts, nor any information on how claimants spend their money”adding that banks and financial institutions will share “limited information” with the Department to “help verify benefit eligibility by flagging possible conflicts with eligibility rules”.

So, now you know. I have been saying this for some time now. Stick with me. I'm always right.

Ethical alarms should be ringing over jabs for the jobless

Would taking a drug be voluntary or would it be mandatory for entitlement to #benefits? Recalling Labour’s previous support for conditionality & sanctions, one can see which way it would go

Would giving #drugs for obesity be precedent for other medical conditions?

Many #unemployed become #depressed. Will #DWP mandate #antidepressants, or lose benefits?

Work & pensions secretary Liz Kendall plans to keep £1.3bn in cuts to UK sickness benefits announced by the previous Tory government. This will affect half a million of the most vulnerable people.
She also plans to keep the draconian Tory changes to work capability assessments, in order to 'encourage' disabled people into work.

Kendall was the only Labour leadership candidate in 2015 to fully back Tory welfare cuts.
