hey, can someone in the USA check if a DOI resolves, please?

10.6084/m9.figshare.29650070

It should resolve to a preprint on Figshare with the title "Quantum Gravity"

→ IMPORTANT: Please do not comment on the quality of the end result, thank you. ←

I have a correspondent who uses public library access in the US midwest who is telling me that this DOI is "blocked" in the USA.

If it doesn't work for you please let me know any error messages. Thanks!

🇧🇷 🇵🇹 **The Cross of Gold: Brazilian Treasure and the Decline of Portugal**

"_In this paper, we show that the discovery of massive quantities of gold in Brazil over the eighteenth century played a key role in the long-run development of Portugal. The country suffered from an economic and political resource curse. A counterfactual based on synthetic control methods suggests that by 1800 Portugal’s GDP per capita was 40 percent lower than it would have been without its endowment of Brazilian gold._"

**Further insights into maternal and paternal human histories in southern Iberia**

"_Genetic ancestry among Andalusians seems to be constituted by three foremost continental origins: European, African and Middle Eastern. The examined male group has revealed a noticeable proportion of individuals (over 45%) with a non-correspondence between maternal and paternal haplogroup origins, a signal of different population demographic histories linked to both sexes in the past._"

**Delving into LLM-assisted writing in biomedical publications through excess vocabulary**

"_We study vocabulary changes in more than 15 million biomedical abstracts from 2010 to 2024 indexed by PubMed and show how the appearance of LLMs led to an abrupt increase in the frequency of certain style words. This excess word analysis suggests that at least 13.5% of 2024 abstracts were processed with LLMs._"

"_High ambient temperatures (99th vs. 25th; 27.3 vs. 6.4 °C) are associated with a ~ 45% increase in the probability of having OSA on a given night, globally. The increase in OSA prevalence in 2023 due to global warming was associated with a loss of 788,198 (489,226 to 1,087,170) healthy life years, and a productivity loss of ~105 million days from impaired workplace attendance in the 29 studied countries._"

[en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:So]

**Vulgarity in online discourse around the English-speaking world**

“_Australians might well be disheartened when they discover that they are not the top users of profanity among English-speaking countries. Their deep national attachment to the vernacular dates back to the original mix of slang, dialect and underworld jargon that gave rise to Australian English — fueled by anti-authoritarian sentiment, the colloquial part of the language expanded to become the feature that best distinguished the established citizen (or old chum) from the stranger (or new chum).”

**From the Masthead to the Map: an Experimental and Digital Approach to Viking Age Seafaring Itineraries**

SpringerLinkFrom the Masthead to the Map: an Experimental and Digital Approach to Viking Age Seafaring Itineraries - Journal of Archaeological Method and TheoryThe Viking Age (c. 800–c. 1050 ad) was characterised by a widespread rise in maritime mobility and interaction, as is made clear by an increasing range of evidence. However, this evidence provides limited information about the sailors and the sailing voyages that connected and transformed the Viking world. This paper presents an approach to reconstruct Viking Age maritime itineraries through the combined use of experimental and digital methods. This approach is grounded in a series of experimental voyages conducted by the author along the Norwegian coast onboard square-rigged, clinker boats built in the descendant Åfjord tradition. The experimental voyages are used to reconstruct the preferences and requirements of Viking Age sailors, helping to define practice-based criteria for evaluating which natural harbours and anchorages might have been favoured during this period. These criteria are complemented by digital reconstructions of historical topographies accounting for changes in relative sea-level since 800 ad. From this combined evaluation, a selection of four possible Viking Age havens is presented. The characteristics and locations of these havens are discussed in relation to contemporary power centres and later seafaring routes. The results suggest that Viking Age seafaring networks along the Norwegian coast may have been more decentralised than their medieval counterparts, and may have relied on relatively outlying nodes on small islands and headlands. The approach highlights the potential of critically combining experimental and digital methods and aims to promote maritime perspectives as an alternative to conventionally terrestrial academic approaches.

⚛ **Editorial: Ending nuclear weapons, before they end us**

“_Even a fraction of the current arsenal could decimate the biosphere in a severe mass extinction event. The global climate disruption caused by the smoke pouring from cities ignited by just 2% of the current arsenal could result in over two billion people starving._”

Abbasi K, Ali P, Barbour V, Birch M, Blum I, Doherty P et al. Ending nuclear weapons, before they end us BMJ 2025; 389 :r881 doi: doi.org/10.1136/bmj.r881

The BMJ · Ending nuclear weapons, before they end usWHO’s mandate to provide evidence on health effects must be restored In May 2025 the World Health Assembly (WHA) will vote on re-establishing a mandate for the World Health Organization (WHO) to address the health consequences of nuclear weapons and war.1 Health professionals and their associations should urge their governments to support such a mandate and support the new UN comprehensive study on the effects of nuclear war. The first atomic bomb exploded in the New Mexico desert 80 years ago, in July 1945. Three weeks later, two relatively small (by today’s standards), tactical size nuclear weapons unleashed a cataclysm of radioactive incineration on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. By the end of 1945, about 213 000 people were dead.2 Tens of thousands more have died from late effects of the bombings. Last December, Nihon Hidankyo, a movement that brings together atomic bomb survivors, was awarded the Nobel peace prize for its “efforts to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons and for demonstrating through witness testimony that nuclear weapons must never be used again.”3 For the Norwegian Nobel committee, the award validated the most fundamental human right: the right to live. The committee warned that the menace of nuclear weapons is now more urgent than ever before. In the words of committee chair, Jørgen Watne Frydnes, “It is naive to believe our civilisation can survive a world order in which global security depends on nuclear weapons. The world is not meant to be a prison in which we await collective annihilation.”4 He noted that our survival depended on keeping intact the “nuclear taboo” (which stigmatises the use of nuclear weapons as morally …

**Narcissism and Affective Polarization**

“_We argue that the personality trait of narcissism (entitled self-importance) is an important correlate of affective polarization. We test this claim in Britain using nationally representative survey data, examining both long-standing party identities and new Brexit identities. SpringerLinkNarcissism and Affective Polarization - Political BehaviorThere are increasing concerns about affective polarization between political groups in the US and elsewhere. While most work explaining affective polarization focuses on a combination of social and ideological sorting, we ask whether people’s personalities are associated with friendliness to their political in-group and hostility to their political out-group. We argue that the personality trait of narcissism (entitled self-importance) is an important correlate of affective polarization. We test this claim in Britain using nationally representative survey data, examining both long-standing party identities and new Brexit identities. Our findings reveal that narcissism, and particularly the ‘rivalry’ aspect of narcissism, is associated with both positive and negative partisanship. This potentially not only explains why some people are more susceptible to affective polarization, but also has implications for elite polarization given that narcissism is an important predictor of elite entry.
