⚠️ Major cybersecurity breach: Pete Hegseth set up an unsecured “dirty” internet line at the Pentagon 📡🕵️‍♂️

According to new reports, Defense Secretary Hegseth:
💬 Installed a private internet connection inside the Pentagon
🚫 Used it to access Signal without authorization
🔓 Circumvented secure communication systems
📡 Exposed sensitive military operations to surveillance

This incident isn’t just about rogue tech use — it’s a direct violation of cybersecurity principles at the highest level.
It highlights how leadership decisions can either fortify — or destroy — national security from within.

⚠️ SignalGate: a masterclass in how not to handle national security in a digital age 🕵️‍♂️📱

Senior U.S. officials used unsecured Signal chats to discuss sensitive military operations — a misstep with massive implications:
🔓 Unvetted comms platforms
🧨 Possible violations of the Espionage Act
📡 Exposure to foreign surveillance
📉 Breakdown of digital governance protocols

🧠 This isn’t just about one app — it’s about a culture of digital complacency in places that can’t afford it.

We need:
🔐 Mandatory secure comms training
🧭 Clear policy guardrails
🛡️ Aggressive accountability

His next point is that we are not focussed enough on privacz andthe impacts on our rights. People choose efficiency over being rights-based when they choose algorithms. He says he's terrified of what billions of young people can do with the power of AI. Quoting Umberto Eco, privacy is not just a legal challenge but a fundamental, anthropological one. (he goes fast, will try to correct later) #AIEthics #DigitalGovernance

I love that Scorza's talk features the application of the GDPR to OpenAI. There is weird and stupid misinformation that even the DSA and DMA are made archaic by "foundation models". It is absolute rubbish. The EU's digital regulation is general to all forms of AI because it is focussed on human rights and the rule of law, and therefore the human processes of building any product, even digital ones. Scorza emphasies that all rights are equal, privacy is not antagonist #AIEthics #DigitalGovernance

Live "tweeting" a bit of this annual meeting Centre for AI and Digital Policy (CAIDP) linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:l starting with the keynote by the Italian Data Protection Authority Guido Scorza.

He starts out with the fact that most AI comes from private labs for private interests. The urgency of regulation is not perceived because technology has not previously impacted so quickly. He never before "to be honest" had worried much about competition law, but now does. #AIEthics #DigitalGovernance

Please do not delete your twitter account! Twitter was essential infrastructure. It should have been identified as a utility and its sale barred. It still has our history, it was once used by over 90% of elected officials globally, and it presently has much wider reach than the new platforms though that may change. IMPO, it is still a resource worth fighting for control over – in courts – as we establish what adequate #digitalGovernance looks like. cf. lawinsider.com/dictionary/esse

@natematias @owasow My concern is the opposite. We have essential infrastructure we haven't identified as such or governed as utilities because since we "won the cold war" we stopped enforcing antitrust. #Inequality has skyrocketed, and with it (like usual) #polarisation #polarization & volatility. We need government intervention to secure this resource, in fact transnational multi-government involvement.

@dangillmor @1br0wn I hope it will accelerate federal intervention. Twitter is essential political communication infrastructure, and there are a lot of political crises going on globally RIGHT NOW. Even if it was badly architected and it's good for us to be airbussing its boeing, casually allowing the destruction of essential infrastructure constructed through vast public effort as well as private is an error. #birdsite #journalism #digitalGovernance
