It's not quite over yet, but already the difference in social media usage between #DH2024 and #DH2023 is huge - both Mastodon and Bluesky have been full of summaries, links and questions
January 2024 in a flash️ First time as #DH2024 Reviewer after successful #DH2023 Attendee Great summary upon work done at #TEIPanorama editor (funded in #DariahLAB) The website for our #DSEcommunities conference is almost ready! Expect invitations in February
@toroe Zur #DH2023 gab es Leute von Stanford, die an einer neuen Version des Convalidator arbeiteten. So wie es jetzt ist, sollten wir uns alle weigern, die Software zu benutzen
It's been about four months since the #DH2023 conference of @adhorg in #Graz. Many exciting impressions and memories were gathered- some of which were also shared here on Mastodon. A great video has now been created for DH2023, allowing us to look back once again: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1asod7-egY Take a look!
"If we were to aim to achieve parity, assuming that there will be only two unique keynote speaker slots at future conferences, we would need to program women-only keynotes for the next 15 years of conferences, until 2035 [...] Over a third (25) worked for European institutions and it should be noted that 50% (36) were located at universities and research institutes in the USA and Canada." -- http://www.digitalhumanities.org/dhq/vol/16/4/000643/000643.html (§49f.)
The slides from our ( @alizhorvathaliz@chnunn@uwuttke ) #workshop during #DH2023 are now online. If you missed it and want to contribute to #OpenMethods, feel free to contact us and watch out for our next workshop. Despite the heat it was very productive, thanks for joining us! While implementing and adapting existing (in some cases cutting-edge) tools and frameworks w/ emphasis on open source, there was less emphasis (or at least mentioning) of participation in maintenance or shaping the long-term sustainability of said tools, which goes back to and means that maybe just a bit more intersection w/ communities focused on #digipres & #OSS development is needed. #Feminist theories and principles of care were mentioned multiple times, but the aspect of #care vis-a-vis #maintenance could be developed further as a practical expression of the point made in .
PS If I have more time later in the week, I’ll try to link concrete talks / resources to each of the points, for now this is a very partial & personal take on #DH2023.
Research software engineering and design are fundamental parts of the DH project cycle, but the practitioners in these fields still feel a bit on the margins of the discourse. Exchanging experience across projects / labs can really help to share best practice & lessons learned, also writing distinct roles in project proposals is often discussed, but not universally applied (and yes, devOps backend & frontend are separate roles, collapse them at your own peril!).
But as a designer, I also think we can do a better job of explaining what do we actually bring to the projects, beyond generic definitions of “running community workshops” and “surveys and interviews with users”.
Panel idea for next year - sharing findings / major usability wins thanks to concrete design interventions in concrete software projects (who’s with me?).
Back to regular office hours after a week at #DH2023 & still feeling a bit tired, overwhelmed + inspired, so putting together a short list of personal take-aways and open questions (before I sit down to write some follow-up emails :))
DH Labs are critically rethinking internal structures;
key question (for me) – how to integrate best practices from science labs & software dev industry, while bringing in the values and ethics of the humanities in more than (just) symbolic ways?
@Literature_Geek I'm working on going through my photo backlog (as far back as the beginning of spring quarter), but there is so much good #DHmakes stuff coming after #DH2023. Stay tuned!
Back home from the #dh2023#gigitalhumanities experience, I feel happy to be home again and simultaneously intensely miss you! Also I compiled a list of many things to follow up with many people Looking at it makes me feeling excited and exhausted at the same time, so for today: rest and ice cream it will be What about you?
Two PhD students won best reviewer awards for their inspiring reviews Wenyi Shang thanks for acknowledgement of reviewing and their efforts on behalf of both of them #DH2023#congratulations
