I chose Synapse though, mainly just because the level of work and maturity that's gone into it.</p><p>Hopefully one day Dendrite will become Element's official server and the development focus there will increase.</p><p>Major caveat on this opinion though: I use synapse but have never tried Dendrite yet. My main criteria is stability for family members who will not tolerate things working less reliably than Skype or whatever Google is calling their thing these days.</p>

scy @ WHY2025 (7299)<p>Okay, I finally took the time to set up my own <a href="https://chaos.social/tags/Synapse" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Synapse</span></a> server. Took me the better parts of two days, but that’s because I wrote the setup in <a href="https://chaos.social/tags/Saltstack" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Saltstack</span></a> instead of just typing commands. Also, setting up <a href="https://chaos.social/tags/Postgres" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Postgres</span></a> and a resizable volume complicated it a bit further.</p><p>Now waiting for <a href="https://chaos.social/tags/Element" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Element</span></a>’s support to provide me the data dumps, keys etc. from my <a href="https://chaos.social/tags/EMS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>EMS</span></a> instance they are currently still hosting.</p><p>If I didn’t need to import existing Synapse data, I probably would’ve gone with <a href="https://chaos.social/tags/Dendrite" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Dendrite</span></a>.</p>

My <a href="https://social.tchncs.de/tags/Matrix" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Matrix</span></a> instance is for my family, including some fairly low-tech family members, so reliability is the number 1 concern. If it breaks I may never get them back from <a href="https://social.tchncs.de/tags/Facebook" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Facebook</span></a> Messenger / <a href="https://social.tchncs.de/tags/Skype" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Skype</span></a> etc.</p><p>I'm assuming that Synapse would be the most reliable as it seems to be the most developed...</p><p>That said, <a href="https://social.tchncs.de/tags/Element" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Element</span></a> video calls with my mother rarely seem to work, unless I use <a href="https://social.tchncs.de/tags/ElementWeb" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ElementWeb</span></a> instead of <a href="https://social.tchncs.de/tags/ElementAndroid" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ElementAndroid</span></a>.</p>
