The operators of electric grids in #NY & #NewEngland say they are still unsure whether the #tariffs apply to #electricity imports from #Canada, but they have filed plans w/ federal regulators to collect duties if they are ordered to do so. The 2 regions receive large amounts of #power from #hydroelectric #dams in Ontario & Quebec, & any tariffs would likely cause electricity bills to go up for households & businesses.

The #ColoradoRiver is shrinking due to #ClimateChange, which means the nation's 2 largest #reservoirs, #LakeMead & #LakePowell, created by #dams, have reached record low levels in recent years amid a #megadrought spanning >2 decades. If #water levels fall much lower, they could lose the ability to generate #hydropower within the massive dams that hold them back, or even lose the ability to pass water downstream.

Death toll reaches 16 as ‘dramatic’ flooding in central Europe continues

The Czech Republic, Poland and Austria fear worst may yet be to come as thousands are evacuated to higher ground

The #Czech police chief, Martin Vondrášek, told local radio on Monday that a woman had 🔸drowned in a stream that overflowed its banks near Bruntál, a town of about 15,000 people in the north-east of the country, while 🔸seven more people were still unaccounted for.

In #Austria, local media reported that 🔸two men aged 70 and 80 drowned after being trapped by rising flood water in their homes in the towns of Böheimkirchen and Sierndorf, both in the hard-hit north-eastern state of Lower Austria.

The number of victims in #Poland rose to six after a surgeon returning from hospital duty drowned in the south-western town of Nysa and four people 🔸died in the southern towns of Bielsko-Biała and Lądek-Zdrój, firefighters said.

⚠️Hundreds of thousands of people have been evacuated from their homes across a swathe of Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia as #Storm #Boris unleashed what one mayor described as a “catastrophe of epic proportions”.

Flooding has burst #dams, flooded #streets, knocked out #electricity and in some places submerged whole neighbourhoods.

“I have lived here for 16 years and I have never seen such flooding,” one Austrian woman, Judith Dickson, told public radio.

Six people died in #Romania over the weekend, as well as one in #Poland and a firefighter in #Austria.

The rain was expected to ease on Monday but, with ♦️some rivers unlikely to reach peak water levels for days, ♦️several major cities were preparing for potentially disastrous flooding.

Around the world, free-flowing natural rivers are being fragmented by dams, weirs and other barriers. It’s one of the biggest, yet least acknowledged, causes of biodiversity loss worldwide.

River fragmentation is a key reason migratory fish populations have declined by 81% since 1970, according to a new report by the Living Planet Index – a rate of wildlife loss six times that of animals that live on land or in the sea.

Although large #dams get the most attention, the researchers found that nine in 10 European river barriers are less than 5 metres high.

Connecting #rivers helps #wildlife travel and allows migratory fish to reach #BreedingGrounds. Removing dams also allows water levels to vary over the year, which can cause habitat changes that increase the diversity of plants and animals, said Pol Huguet, a city councillor in the Spanish town of Manresa, whichremoved a dam as part of a #rewilding project.

#Salmon were once abundant in #rivers and #streams running through these redwood forests, But #dams, #logging, #development and #drought — due in part to climate change — have destroyed the waterways and threatened many of these #species. Last year recreational and commercial king salmon fishing seasons were closed along much of the West Coast due to near-record low numbers of the iconic fish returning to their spawning grounds.
