They're beautiful, but brutal. Even the juveniles will see off much bigger birds, such as magpies and crows. They're reduced to waiting until the moorhens aren't about, quickly filling their beaks with as much as they can carry, and flying away to eat in safety.

There's a neighborhood cat whose presence is always announced by the outraged crows yelling and swooping at him. But they pay no attention to our cat, even if he's walking right by them. i can only assume that the other cat has menaced them or their nests in some way, and Stanley never does that.Anyway, yesterday three crows were standing quietly on our driveway apron looking at Stanley, as he sat looking back at them and meowing chattily from no more than 10 feet away.To Stanley, a <a href="https://qoto.org/tags/bird" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#bird</a> is a person if he's ever seen us talking to it. I've spoken to scrub <a href="https://qoto.org/tags/jays" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#jays</a>, <a href="https://qoto.org/tags/hummingbirds" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#hummingbirds</a> and crows in his presence, and since then I've seen him talk to them as well.

I did see two fledglings at the same time for sure, I may or may not have seen the third one (but it could be one of the other two).We'll see tomorrow. Mom was around, but going from one utility pole to another to a roof, to the peanuts I left her to another spot and so on. I could hear the caws of a baby calling the parents, but I couldn't locate it. I decided to give up and go home, but once on my balcony, I saw a fledgling near the injured baby. I ran back down and finally saw it.I stayed a bit longer. It was there, just below the nest, clearly not in a good shape (bugs had already started to fly around it) and unfortunately not long for this world. I don't know what happened. It seemed much smaller than the other ones, and probably not ready to leave the nest yet.
