Year of the Co-ops
Did you know the UN has made 2025 ‘International year of co-operatives’?
Co-ops are democratically owned businesses or organisations, with the co-op’s members in control to meet their shared needs. The members may be customers, employees, residents or suppliers.
All co-ops the world over shares the same 7 principles and 10 values.
Around 40% of the UK’s 7000 co-ops are consumer owned – think credit unions, high street Co-op supermarkets and Your Co-op, while over 350 are worker owned e.g. Essential (Food & Household specialists), Footprint Workers Co-op (Riso printers), Go Free Range (Software development revolutionaries: @freerange), Suma (Food, household, toiletries), Veggies (Catering company: @Veggies) and workers.coop (Federation of worker-led cooperatives: @workers_coop). Others can be multi-stakeholder owned such as Webarchitects (Cloud hosting services).
Examples of international co-ops are cosocial (Non profit social media platform: @coop – Canada), Limeleaf (Software developers: @limeleaf – USA), Nubo (Ethical mail & cloud services: @nubo_coop – Belgium), Ouvaton (Hosting & software services: @ouvaton – France) and Society (Digital technologies: @sociality – Greece).
The Labour government did say in its pre-election manifesto that it would double the size of the co-op sector and mutual economy in the UK, but as with many manifesto pledges I wouldn’t hold your breath.
The 10 official co-operative ‘values’ are:
There's a simple solution to all of this. The for-profit, publicly traded corporation must go the way of the wind. Non-profits and cooperatives can fill the gap, *without* exploitation.

If only there were some way to avoid this outcome. Like, a business model that didn't harvest wealth from every transaction between workers and consumers and dump it into some oligarch's bank account. A business model where any money taken from the community went right back to that same community. Maybe a community owned business? A business owned by the workers and/or consumers?
we're pleased to announce https://guixotic.coop, a new free software cooperative focused on gnu guix and guile cofounded by @podiki, maxim cournoyer and me. we offer services including training, commercial support, development, system administration (CI/CD, HPC), packaging -- in short, everything guix and guile.
our goal is to strengthen & expand the community, bringing in new people and organizations (our clients), supporting development work, and growing the network of organizations supporting these technologies.
could you or an organization you know of benefit from our services? email contact@guixotic.coop or contact us here!

Only single proprietorships, non-profits, and cooperatives are exceptions to this pattern. These business models, in contrast to for-profit corporations, either are owned by the community members or do not harvest profits.

“They say, ‘We tried socialism; it didn’t work. We tried… the market model; it didn’t work. What are we supposed to do now?’ ” Stiglitz said. “I think it’s really important to say there are some other models out there.”

“When people feel excluded in social and economic terms, they also often feel excluded in political terms and that can lead to very short-term as well as long-term adversarial outcomes,” he added.
"They were united in their beliefs that co-ops can provide a voice for citizens who feel ignored. That could be an antidote to the anti-system outrage associated with the vote in Great Britain to abandon the European Union and other nationalistic movements, they suggested."
"Nu neoliberalisme als ideologie failliet gaat, daagt voor de coöperatie de wederopstanding. Een eigentijds verlangen naar redelijkheid, groen, zeggenschap, solidariteit en bestaanszekerheid brengt burgers samen."
Marcia Luyten in haar Volkskrant artikel "Samen een vuist maken tegen roofzuchtig kapitalisme: het kan, bewijzen de coöperaties"

Coming back to add:
This is something you can do *right now* to fight fascism. Cancel billionaires! Only give your money to single proprietorships, mom and pop businesses, and cooperatives. Cut the billionaires right out of the money cycle, every chance you get. Leave them stranded, high and dry, an island in the river. Cut off their supply, their oxygen. Never stop. Starve them. Suffocate them. Hit them where it hurts. Keep hitting till they no longer exist. Never again!

We don't just need to stop fascism in its tracks. We need to kill the problem at its root. No more billionaires! When we rise from the ashes and re-establish a democracy -- hopefully with some improvements to keep this from ever happening again -- we must be sure to close the loophole that created this mess: No more for-profit corporations.
Cooperatives can do the job that for-profit corporations have done for us till now, without the wealth inequality that for-profit corporations create. We don't need capitalism. We don't need stocks or stock markets. We damn sure don't need billionaires. And we don't need the fascism and hatred that billionaires create as they hoard what belongs to *us*.
This whole time, we have had an alternative, a way to build the local economic mechanisms we need to survive: Businesses that serve the community instead of rich people's pockets. Cooperatives.
They pillage us perpetually, openly, in broad daylight, and we are so brainwashed into thinking that capital investment is fundamentally necessary for industry that we don't even see it.
But capital investment by fat cats is *not* needed for our economy. The only reason there's a shortage of resources to create new businesses and new products is that we have already been harvested for our wealth for so long and to such an extreme extent.
This is because billionaires only come to exist by founding or investing in for-profit companies. Only for-profit companies can concentrate wealth to that degree, by harvesting it from the workers and consumers. Every single transaction between a worker and a consumer which is mediated by a for-profit company has a hidden tax, in the form of profit, which goes to some wealthy person who contributes nothing after their initial investment and gets to collect on that investment *indefinitely*.

Put them together: Cooperatives are a tool for preventing and fighting fascism. They work by reducing wealth and income inequality.
