#XMPP

@vort3 @ravi Basically you only need to tell your contacts 'Install #Prav', they will know the rest of the drill from their #WhatsApp experience to start chatting with you. Now try the same with #Conversations. They will hestate to pay to install Conversations. Either you have to convince them it is worth the money or explain about #Fdroid. Try this experiment with 10 of your friends after you setup Prav account. Please share your experience.

I deleted all other Messenger and I switched to XMPP-only-mode (and IRC).
My family is using dino and #conversations. It"s our main messenger for our family. This is a good starting point and step-by-step more people are joining.

Was having issues with #Signal notifications again, so I set my mom up with #Quicksy #XMPP as a backup messenger in case she can't get hold of me on Signal. I'm still using #Conversations, but talking her thru setting up Quicksy was straight forward and simple.

I'll probably go down and set up #Dino on her desktop PC sometime tomorrow so she has something she can use on her PC.

Thanks to @daniel for all his hard work on both Conversations, Quicksy and XMPP, 🙂

I recently developed a thing to turn a Conversations chat* into a PDF.

codeberg.org/moji/typst-conver

That story began with a friend of mine that had got a XMPP group chat where they shared updates and pictures of their latest travel adventure. Now chat is rather ephemeral and they wanted to preserve those memories in an easy accessible format that is PDF. And so I put something together.

* actually any chat as long as you can get the raw data in the expected format

Codeberg.orgtypst-conversationsA parametrized Typst document to visualize a chat conversation with text and image messages — closely matching the design of Conversations.

I was chatting to one of Kid3's friends in the kitchen the other week, and he was saying that he helped his mum in the garden now and then.

'I find it kind of boring,' he admitted.

And while I was weeding today, I was thinking how there is a bunch of things like that in your childhood, isn't there? But it's still good to have those experiences, even the boring ones, the chores. I didn't really love gardening as a child either, or makig food, or practising piano – I would have rather been reading or playing with my pets or hanging out with friends.

And now cooking, gardening, playing music... they're skills I have and ones I've grown better at myself through practice, and more importantly, I love doing them.

When I spoke to the friend, I reassured him that he might come to enjoy the gardening later and he smiled (because he is 14 and later is forever away, isn't it?)

Would like to #askfedi about the "Conversations Legacy" #conversations #conversations_im @daniel #xmpp client - this version used to be on GooglePlay before some time, but later has disappeared, and I seem to have missed any "official" comment in that regard.

Do I understand correctly that it is just not supported/updated anymore and people who have it (I know somebody) shall update to the mainstream for security reasons?

Would the update recognize the old data or one should proceed via backup and its restoration (if it is possible)? Thanks.

Yes, that's why people should select a large server, such as #conversations.im, if they care about anonymity.

I'm not sure, what a good distribution of users over servers were, giving both relatively good anonymity and a good level of resilience against shutdown (IMHO major risk for Signal). Maybe square root? One million users ⇒ one thousand servers with one thousand users each?

@axbom I too have been doing some similar evaluating of alternatives. I would recommend adding:

- #Zulip (Slack, #Mattermost competitor) More info: c.im/@sbb/114034480079879818
- #Conversations/ #Gajim/ #Prosody (is similarly E2E encrypted, but additionally federated, unlike Signal), this is my #XMPP "stack" at present (more info: c.im/@sbb/114032786446300932 )
- #Deltachat (is federated, unlike #Signal) More info: c.im/@sbb/114043962394278098
- #flarum , a forum similar to Discourse, but will run on a #RaspberryPi, unlike Discourse
- #calibre-web for your ebook collection
- #shiori, for private cloud bookmarks

C.IMBhante Subharo (@sbb@c.im)@adamhsparks@rstats.me @dangoodin@infosec.exchange +1 for Zulip; they worked hard on performance improvements in the latest major release. They know Mattermost is ahead of them in popularity, and have more of a "good faith" culture. Might try it myself in the medium term
