As part of its ongoing war against both public services and media that reports on the Trump regime critically, the heads of NPR and PBS were dragged before a congressional subcommittee run by noted fascist freak Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), whose language made it clear the Trump regime is borrowing a playbook from one of the darkest periods of US history:

theguardian.com/us-news/2025/m

NPR and PBS testify in heated hearing of Marjorie Taylor Greene’s Doge panel

"NPR and PBS have increasingly become radical leftwing echo chambers,” said the Georgia Republican representative Marjorie Taylor Greene during her opening remarks, accusing NPR of having a “communist agenda”.

The hearing, called “Anti-American Airwaves: Holding the Heads of NPR and PBS Accountable”, was chaired by Greene who is head of a “delivering on government efficiency” group within the House oversight committee.

The Doge subcommittee hearing comes as the Trump administration, including the senior presidential adviser Elon Musk, wage a months-long campaign against public broadcasters and critical media more broadly. The FCC, led by a recent Trump appointee, opened an investigation into NPR and PBS in January. A day before the hearing, President Donald Trump said he would “love to” end public funding for the public broadcasters."

I know there's a tendency among "respectable" people to ignore everything Greene says and does because she's a raving nazi crank, and often a circus-level distraction from "serious" politics; but in this case I think doing so would be a grave mistake. Why? Because she just turned a govt efficiency panel into a House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) session right out of the darkest days of McCarthyism, before using the regime's reactionary grievances with NPR and PBS to further its war on media, public broadcasting, and programs funded for the education and edification of the American public.

If you think I'm going too far with that comparison, consider the title of the hearing (Anti-American Airwaves: Holding the Heads of NPR and PBS Accountable) and keep in mind that the purpose of calling it is ostensibly "efficiency." This is a funding recommendation panel. Greene doesn't have the authority to "hold the heads of NPR and PBS accountable" but before she even spoke a word, she'd already cast the networks' programing as anti-American and a danger to the nation.

If that doesn't convince you, consider the lines of questioning Greene pursued and the content of her arguments. She literally accused NPR of having a "communist agenda," cast critical reporting of the Trump regime as anti-American, and grilled PBS's Paula Kerger about LGBTQ+ content like it was some kinda crime.

"The attacks on PBS, meanwhile, heavily focused on opposition to LGBTQ+ content in its programming. “They are now part of transing children, brainwashing children about gender,” Greene said of PBS on Tuesday during an interview on the rightwing channel Newsmax.

Greene repeatedly attacked PBS during the hearing over claims that it featured a drag performer on one of its shows, holding up a poster of the performer who she described as “child predator” and “monster.”

Folks, this is an official representative of the govt seriously arguing that showing a fully-clothed drag performer singing a children's song is an anti-American plot to "trans" and "brainwash" US children. No really; and she accused the singer of being a child predator without evidence to boot. She also accused both networks of being a "radical leftwing echo chamber" which would be an absurd comment on its face given the milquetoast, barely left of center content found on both networks, if not for the inclusion of the sinister-sounding word "radical" and the larger context of the hearing.

Please keep in mind that after seizing control of the typically independent FCC (see article at the top of this thread), Trump minion and Project 2025 author Brendan Carr immediately opened up clearly ideological investigations into NPR and PBS, and Downmarket Mussolini himself has been threatening to revoke the licenses of ostensibly "liberal" media that criticizes him or reports on his unlawful activities, including PBS and NPR. In that context, all of this, including this hearing, is designed to manufacture consent for ideological policing every bit as reactionary and malicious as the HUAC and McCarthyism.

In terms of spending, the government doesn't provide very much of NPR and PBS's funding; which only goes to demonstrate the purpose of this hearing was ideological policing, not govt efficiency. Because these people use the whole cow however, Greene still seized the moment to advocate for dismantling the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, even though it won't shut down NPR or PBS, because doing so will shut down local media and these fascists want you ignorant and reliant on their propaganda outlets for the news.

‘A true free-speech emergency’: alarm over Trump’s ‘chilling’ attacks on media

The Trump administration is waging a 🆘disturbing attack on the freedom of the press
that amounts to a
🔥“true free-speech emergency”, media experts have warned,
as the Federal Communications Commission recently launched an #investigation into a series of media organizations, including the owner of NBC News.
The FCC, led by Donald Trump appointee and Project 2025 author #Brendan #Carr, has ordered
💥investigations into #NPR and #PBS in the first month since Trump took office,
while also scrutinizing a #CBS News interview and a San Francisco radio station.
In a letter to #Comcast, which owns NBC News, Carr said he had asked the FCC’s enforcement bureau to “open an investigation” into the corporation, stating:
“I am concerned that Comcast and NBCUniversal may be promoting invidious forms of #DEI in a manner that does not comply with FCC regulations.”

Trump’s FCC chair investigates NPR and PBS,
and urges Congress to defund them

Federal Communications Commission Chairman #Brendan #Carr has ordered an investigation into NPR and PBS.

"I am writing to inform you that I have asked the FCC's Enforcement Bureau to open an investigation regarding the airing of NPR and PBS programming across your broadcast member stations," Carr wrote in a letter yesterday to the leaders of NPR and PBS.

Journalists at CBS News are livid at Paramount Global boss Shari Redstone over the company's move to engage in settlement talks with Donald Trump.

#Paramount #Global has been in detailed discussions with Donald Trump‘s team about settling his ⚠️lawsuit against CBS over the way that a 60 Minutes interview with Kamala Harris was edited last year, we can confirm.

Any settlement would be a highly conciliatory gesture to Trump.

He was not even part of the 60 Minutes piece, but he sued the network for $10 billion under Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act,
which is generally aimed at false advertising.

⭐️But Paramount Global is seeking the greenlight for its sale to Skydance, something that requires the regulatory approval of the Trump administration.

#Brendan #Carr, who Trump appointed to lead the FCC, has indicated that the 60 Minutes interview would be part of its review of the transaction

Donald Trump's pick to lead the Federal Communications Commission,
#Brendan #Carr, wants the FCC to crack down on news broadcasters that he perceives as being unfair to Trump or Republicans in general.

Carr's stated goals would mark a major shift in the FCC's approach to broadcasters.

Carr's predecessors, including outgoing Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel and Republican Ajit Pai,
who served in the first Trump administration,
both rejected Trump's calls to punish news networks for alleged bias.

Carr has instead embraced Trump's view that broadcasters should be punished for supposed anti-conservative bias.

Carr has threatened to revoke licenses by wielding the FCC's authority to ensure that broadcast stations using public airwaves operate
"in the public interest"
-- despite previous chairs saying the First Amendment prevents the FCC from revoking licenses based on content.

Revoking licenses or blocking license renewals is difficult legally, experts told Ars.

But Carr could use his power as FCC chair to pressure broadcasters and force them to undergo costly legal proceedings,
even if he never succeeds in taking a license away from a broadcast station.

"Look, the law is very clear," Carr told CNBC on December 6. "The Communications Act says you have to operate in the public interest. And if you don't, yes, one of the consequences is potentially losing your license. And of course, that's on the table. I mean, look, broadcast licenses are not sacred cows."

News organizations are bracing for the incoming Trump administration to go after journalists’ sources and take legal action against them.

In an email shared with Semafor, Axios’ senior counsel told staff that the news organization anticipates the new administration will attempt to force reporters to out their sources,
will ramp up lawsuits against news organizations for defamation,
and could charge journalists with crimes using the Espionage Act.

“We anticipate more aggressive government efforts to investigate leaks
— which could include a wave of subpoenas seeking journalists’ phone records, documents, and testimony,”
senior newsroom counsel Brian Westley wrote in an email to staff.

“Of particular concern: [Stories] involving unnamed sources that disclose government information without authorization
— including sensitive conversations including the president or other top officials.”

“This stuff is NO JOKE.
The framework of legal protections for journalists we live under is relatively recent and under real threat.
One bad court case could have a big impact,
so it’s important for everybody to be careful and aware of the risks,”
the company said.

Media organizations are increasingly on high alert as multiple incoming members of the administration have expressed a willingness to use the tools of their office to pursue legal action against journalists.

#Brendan #Carr, Donald Trump’s pick for Federal Communications Commission chair, said he wants to explore whether to strip local stations of their broadcast licenses,

while #Kash #Patel, who Trump has tapped to lead the FBI, has said he wants “to come after the people in the media who lied about American citizens, who helped Joe Biden rig presidential elections.”

As has been well documented,
Trump’s nominees could also have broad license to interfere in the major media mergers many companies are itching to do over the next several years.

At least one news organization seemed to want to get out of Trump’s way preemptively.

On Saturday, media insiders were shocked when ABC News agreed to pay $15 million to settle a defamation suit brought by Trump over inaccurate claims made by anchor George Stephanopoulos,
one most media lawyers thought the organization could have won in court

Donald Trump repeatedly told America he had “nothing to do” with #Project2025.
But now, he’s welcoming its architect into his Cabinet with open arms.

#Russ #Vought, who was deeply involved in the creation of Project 2025 and wrote an entire chapter in the right-wing playbook,
is being strongly considered for an #upcoming Cabinet position, according to several sources who spoke with ABC News.

Vought has already begun the vetting process and has been seen at Mar-a-Lago meeting with Trump’s team.

Vought—a former lobbyist, self-described #Christian #nationalist, and director of the Office of Management and Budget in Trump’s first term
—authored a chapter in the 922-page MAGA extremist master plan titled
“Executive Office of the President” for Project 2025’s
“Mandate for Leadership: The Conservative Promise” section.
The chapter serves as
“a comprehensive policy guide for the next conservative U.S. president.”

Vought isn’t the only Project 2025 alum being floated for a crucial role in the Trump Cabinet.
#Gene #Hamilton, who wrote a chapter about how the Justice Department needed a
“top to bottom overhaul” because it is
“captured by an unaccountable bureaucratic managerial class and radical Left ideologues who have embedded themselves throughout its offices and components,”
has been seriously floated for an important legal team position.

Trump has also nominated Project 2025 contributor and free-speech “warrior” #Brendan #Carr to serve as Federal Communications Commission chair.

On the campaign trail, Trump had tried to distance himself from Project 2025, 💥particularly after it became a focus point for Democrats.
“This was a group of people that got together, they came up with some ideas, I guess some good, some bad, but it makes no difference.
I have nothing to do [with it],” Trump stated during his nationally televised debate with Vice President Kamala Harris.
His loyal transition team co-chair #Howard #Lutnick described the project as an “absolute zero” and “radioactive.”
And yet here we are,
with Vought, Carr, and Hamilton cozying back up to the president-elect,
who was surely lying to America throughout his campaign.
🔥The skeleton plan for the far-right takeover is coming alive.
