Considering upgrading my #camera game for a new job. Have $800 to spend (not necessarily looking to spend it all). Will be using with #Linux (#NixOS). Or can still be a #webcam, but wanting to go higher end. Would like the depth of field look. Also have direct light behind me (windows). Suggestions?
Scam Alert
I almost fell for an ad/website offering an 80% discount on Leica cameras. If it sounds too good to be true, it is. Leica is aware of those fraud sites and has put a warning on its site. The one I checked was onlineleicamera.shop.

Remember #libobscura ?
The project didn't attract a huge community, but it did teach me stuff so obscure that few people apart from the authors understand it.
So I started writing it down, for everyone's benefit.

Its worse than I thought!
Apologies. That was a total click-bait title.
Here is the correct title: Update on the state of my film camera for anyone interested.
I recently posted about the new (old) Canon AE-1 that I acquired. I have been on the hunt for a film camera for quite some time now, and this one ticked all my boxes for a scoping expedition into the wild world of analogue photography.
She is in excellent condition, except for the light seals (the foam/felt strips that run around the film door of the camera to stop light from leaking in when it is shut) which have degraded over time to the point of being…well, gone. So it was worst than I thought.
There is also a small strip of foam (bumper foam) that prevents the mirror from getting damaged as it flips up out of the way when you take a photo. Gone.
I made some inquiries, but alas and alack there does not seem to be anyone here in Canberra that does film camera servicing/repairs. The recommended folks in Sydney have a waiting list, and getting the camera up and back might be problematic.
So, I found a DIY light seal kit on Amazon, and with a little YouTube instruction (watch one… assume instant expert level), I will have a crack at it myself.
What could possibly go wrong, right?

Review: InfiRay Thermal P2 Pro USB-C Camera for Android
https://shkspr.mobi/blog/2023/06/review-infiray-thermal-usb-c-camera-for-android/
The good folks at InfiRay have sent me their latest Infrared camera to review. It is tiny.
It's smaller than a normal USB stick and barely weighs anything. Shove the USB-C protrusion into your Android phone, launch the app, and... nope - that's it! Pretty much instantly plug and play.
There's also a reasonably long USB-C extension cable, so you can poke the camera in small places without needing to get your phone up close to something hot. But, if you do want to get close, the magnetic cover acts as a macro lens. Perfect for seeing which capacitor on your motherboard is about to blow!
Image Quality
The IR lens is only 256x192. It doesn't sound like a lot, but that's quite high spec for these sort of consumer devices. Everything is upscaled - and there's an overlay to show you the temperatures. Here's my face - what a cold nose!
There's no IR EXIF, sadly, but you do get GPS.
Video
The video is upscaled to 1080x1440 - which allows for the information overlay to be a sensible size. Frame rate is about 11fps - but we're not going for cinematic quality here! Codec is h264 but fairly uncompressed.
https://shkspr.mobi/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/kettle-infiniray.mp4There doesn't seem to be a way to get rid of the InfiRay watermark - but perhaps it is burried in the app settings somewhere?
App
The Android app is spartan, but functional. You can fiddle around with the camera's colour pallets, play with some image and video quality settings, and record video.
It's also possible to show your phone's camera simultaneously with the thermal image - so you can get an idea of what you're seeing.
Linux Nerds
The camera shows up as 0bda:5830 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. USB Camera
and is automatically recognised as a USB camera.
The only issue is with the way it presents itself. Opening up Google Meet shows the image split like this:
No idea what's going on there! But it should be easy enough to stream from the camera and post-process it.
Price
Now, here's the rub. What with the global chip shortages and the need for IR sensors in military equipment, the price of these devices is unfairly high.
The price on Amazon is around £220 - use the code terence12
to get a discount. That's a chunk of change! But these cameras are useful if you want to check for leaks, or dodgy insulation, or whether your computer is overheating.
You can also buy from the official website.
I've reviewed several IR cameras. The P2 Pro is a great gadget. It's small, the app doesn't suck, and it seems pretty accurate.
It's a bargain if a group of you are buying it for a hack-lab.

My new (old) camera.
After hunting around for quite a while now, I have acquired this Canon AE-1 35mm film camera with a 50mm f1.4 lens.
These cameras were manufactured between 1976 and 1984, and I was lucky enough to get this one in excellent condition.
A fact made quasi-astounding when you see the state of the case it arrived in (below).
I’m just waiting for a new battery to arrive (the E in AE stands for electronic – it was one of the first cameras with electronic exposure wizardry), and fingers crossed the old girl will fire up just like it’s 1980 again.
Make no mistake, film photography makes no sense. The film stock is expensive, as is the developing cost, you can’t see the photo you just took for ages….and at the end of the whole process you have a digital photo anyway.
But it’s a thing.
And I’m excited to explore the nonsensical-ness of it all.
