This is remarkable and well done. I guess it's because it was installed/approved by CALTRANS. Buffered bike lane and corner barriers (so drivers don't cut over and run over bicyclists going onto the freeway). Separate crossing for pedestrians. Bike lane marked across freeway entrance/exit. This is really amazing, compared to the rest of our area. #biketooter #cycling #infrastructure #caltrans

There's an oddly progressive stretch of bicycle lane here in our town under the 101 freeway. It appears this is because it is owned and constructed by the State of California (CALTRANS), which appears to have *better* minimum requirements for bicycle lanes and pedestrian infrastructure than our town. YAY CALTRANS! #caltrans

Representatives from 60 climate, transportation, and environmental justice advocacy organizations sent a letter today (full text in post) to Governor Gavin Newsom, urging him to hold the California Department of Transportation (#Caltrans) accountable to his climate vision. Recent developments at Caltrans threaten the state’s reputation as a leader in fighting climate change, including through disregard for the governor’s climate action agenda for the transpo sector, the Climate Action Plan for Transportation Infrastructure (CAPTI).

Bicycling Monterey is among the signatories because Caltrans’ implementation of CAPTI has been marked by continued expansions of highways and interchanges, persistent neglect of its own guidance for reducing vehicle miles traveled and greenhouse gas emissions, and repeated efforts to dilute its #CompleteStreets policy.

#Caltrans folks are mostly very nice, but the extent to which they continue to widen #freeways is extraordinary, especially considering the effect #driving has on #climatechange, and the degree to which it overwhelms open space in the communities that they pass through. The area mentioned in this article has perfectly good Amtrak right through it, and I bet they could use a little more funding.

Where I live, they are really hankering to widen and straighten a highway through an ancient creek canyon that has a rich native riparian ecosystem, which only recently has had salmon restored.

And if we don't encourage people to return to offices, maybe we don't need that freeway space. Maybe people need to sit in traffic, I don't know. I just think this is misguided, trying to pile freeway lane on top of freeway lane until we are all asphalt and concrete.

Another #infrastructure disappointment for North #MontereyCounty. To the best of our knowledge (and we confirmed with our most reliable source on this project), this time it's #PG&E, not #Caltrans, impacting a project that #Transportation Agency for #Monterey County has been eager to see happen—as have residents and visitors.

Here's what's up: "A major project at #Highway156 in #Castroville risks losing funding due to delays," as reported by Celia Jiménez in #MontereyCountyWeekly montereycountyweekly.com/news/ The project includes three #roundabouts, #bicycle paths, and #sidewalks, among other improvements.

Curious about the California Dept of Transportation / Caltrans project we're also referring to? ICYMI, see "#MontereyBay Sanctuary Scenic #Trail: #MossLanding Segment": bikemonterey.org/monterey-bay-
