The “#TargetFast” coincides w/ #Lent & is the latest #consumer action against one of the largest retail companies in the country. Since #Target announced that it would roll back some #DEI efforts, including plans to hire from underrepresented groups, consumer #boycotts & demonstrations have sprung up across the country. Many occurred during #Black History Month, & on Feb 28, consumers participated in a 24hr“economic blackout” of major corporate chains.

I definitely encourage all Americans, indeed all people around the world, who can afford to do so to engage in #boycotts; however, I would caution you to refrain from shaming those of us who cannot afford to do so.

The retail supply chain in America is dominated by megacorporations. The 60% of Americans who are living paycheck-to-paycheck cannot necessarily afford to refrain from buying necessities at the lowest possible prices, whether those are from Amazon, Walmart, Target, or anywhere else.

Update. @juddlegum and his colleagues at _Popular Information_ spotlight 10 #corporations that kept their promise not to give money to politicians who voted to overturn the 2020 election — and a few (like #Amazon and #ATT) that didn't.

Cop Killer - #BodyCount

youtu.be/yg_S4JJMxPU?si=mpviAV

Fab live coverage from 1992.

When talking about #controversial #music, there are few more shining examples than #CopKiller. Recorded by #IceT’s rock group Body Count, “Cop Killer” is a heated #song about a victim of #PoliceBrutality who violently takes matters into his own hands. The song faced criticism from #LawEnforcement agencies, the Parents Music Resource Center #PMRC, President #GeorgeHWBush and the public in general. Some people responded through #protests and #boycotts of any company associated with the distribution of the record. This caused sales to skyrocket, but also prompted certain stores to take the album off their shelves. Some countries, such as #NewZealand, attempted to have the song and the #rap group itself completely #banned. Stockholders threatened to pull out from #WarnerBrosRecords and executives received #DeathThreats. While Ice-T stood by his work, stating that it was a #ProtestSong meant to reflect hateful emotions rather than encourage violence, he subsequently decided to recall the album, removing the trouble-making song upon re-release.
