5. Ruru

The only one of my five that I still haven't seen. I do however, HEAR them almost every night. A nearby park lost some dying trees in Gabrielle, and since then, some ruru have made their home there. I can't believe how far such small birds can send their calls!

2. Tokoeka

Back in 2022, we were privileged to see two of these in the wild, during the day, 90 minutes apart on Te Wharawhara/Ulva Island. Amazing. Learning afterwards that tokoeka means "weka with a walking stick" cemented them in the heart of this Kiwi with a walking stick

2nd on my list is the ruler of the night, the Ruru.

Although it is not currently endangered, I have undying loyalty to this bird and its nighttime call. Every year I support them and we are yet to win it.

They are cool and cute and a bit creepy. Love them.

It's #BOTY time!
In #Aotearoa, every year we vote for the Bird of the Year, and through it raise awareness and funding for environmental protection.
Last year we had serious foreign election meddling from the likes of John Oliver, but it looks like this year we will have a more "free and fair" election.

I have voted for my favourites and I will tell you why you should too!
