oatmeal<p>More on <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Germany" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Germany</span></a> and <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/israels" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>israels</span></a> quid pro quo relationship and Ben-Gurion's calculated effort to balance holding a major Holocaust related trial while securing German money and knowhow for building Israel's nuclear reactor at Dimona. </p><p>Germany suspended all military and financial assistance to Israel during the trial of Adolf <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Eichmann" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Eichmann</span></a> (that took place in Jerusalem from April 11 to August 13, 1961,) explicitly conditioning renewal on how the trial was conducted. Once Ben-Gurion successfully managed the trial without damaging Germany's image, <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Adenauer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Adenauer</span></a> expressed gratitude and <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Peres" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Peres</span></a> secured significant military equipment as compensation.</p><p>[...] Ben-Gurion knew that the Germans were very worried about the trial, as he wrote in his diary, and apparently also knew that they were following every statement that might harm them, so he was also careful not to make statements during the trial period. They applied heavy pressure on Israel and froze all commitments for arms deals, reparations and the loan for the Negev project, and made clear that they would renew the agreements 'according to what would be said in the trial.' At the end of the trial, Deputy Defense Minister Shimon Peres met with Chancellor Adenauer, and the latter asked to convey thanks to his dear friend Ben-Gurion for having managed the trial well. Peres presented the expected compensation - weapons without money - submarines, missiles, and [classified] [classified] [classified]."</p><p>-----------</p><p>West Germany's first installment of 200 million marks annually for the reactor came August 14, 1961 - one day after the trial ended.
