catching up on this interesting #YIVO lecture by Jeffrey Veidlinger from a few days ago. it's drawing on oral history of #Yiddish speakers done by him, Dov Ber Kerler and others in an NEH funded project in the early 2000s. In this lecture he focuses on memories of life in the Soviet Shtetls around Ukraine. Quite interesting. I was actually just reading Veidlinger's older book Jewish Public Culture in the Late Russian Empire on my camping trip.

New Yorkers are faced with a tough choice for their mayor: Rapist or not rapist? Helping billionaires or helping people with no money? Asshole who accuses Jewish candidate of anti-semitism who gets cursed out in Yiddish, or nice man endorsed by Jewish candidate? Tough. Tough. #uspol #jewish #yiddish #newyork #DontRankCuomo jta.org/2025/04/02/politics/br

think it's time I made an #Introduction

I'm Orthodox #Jewish tho in my small local community it can be hard to find friends bc I'm also a #Leftist #AntiNationalist. I play #Violin; currently: translations of songs with themes of #Anarchy & #WorkingClass #Solidarity. influenced by #Klezmer, #Celtic & #Folk #Music. I work in a community #Ceramics studio & study #IMLS (Info Management & #LibraryScience) / #GLAM (Galleries Libraries #Archives Museums), & #Yiddish culture/history of #EasternEurope.

It just looks like a mess of paper, but.. while I was in Montreal Josh Dolgin (Socalled) invited me to his office at McGill to look at the boxes of Yiddish choral music which were discarded after the sale of the former Arbeter Ring (Workers Circle) building. It's about 3 big boxes with many duplicates so he's still trying to match parts together and make sense of what is in there.

Today in Labor History February 15, 1910: The ILGWU declared the Uprising of Twenty Thousand shirtwaist strike officially over. The garment workers strike began September 27, 1909, in response to abysmal wages and safety conditions. The majority of striking workers were immigrant women, mostly Yiddish-speaking Jews (75%) and Italians (10%), and mostly under the age of 20. Five women died in the strike, which the union won, signing contracts with 339 manufacturing firms. However, 13 firms, including Triangle Shirtwaist Company, never settled. One of the demands had been for adequate fire escapes and for open doors to the streets for emergencies. In 1911, 146 girls and women were killed in the Triangle Shirtwaist fire.

On Sunday I will sing two recitals, one in the morning in #Detmold, and one in the evening in #Darmstadt.

The morning recital will be in the Landestheater Detmold with pianist Mathias Mönius, featuring some of my favorite Jewish composers: Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Leonard Bernstein, Lazar Weiner, Simon Sargon, Jerome Kern, Harold Arlen, Sholom Secunda, and Abraham Ellstein!

Today in Labor History November 20, 1896: Rose Pesotta was born on this date to a Jewish family in Ukraine. Pesotta was an anarchist labor activist and the only woman on the General Executive Board of the International Ladies' Garment Workers (ILGWU) from 1933-1944. She learned about anarchism by reading books by Bakunin in her father’s library. Her parents set up an arranged marriage for her, which she did not approve. So, she emigrated to the U.S. in 1913, joining the ILGWU the next year. Her local, #25, was filled with militant women veterans of the 1909 Shirtwaist Strike. She wrote regularly for the New York Anarchist press, in both English and in Yiddish. She was friends with Italian-American anarchist Bartolomeo Vanzetti. In 1933, she organized immigrant Mexican garment workers, leading to the Los Angeles Garment Workers Strike. She also organized workers in Canada and Puerto Rico. Later in life, she worked briefly for the B’nai B’rith. She also wrote two memoirs, Bread Upon the Waters (1944),[6] and Days of Our Lives (1958).
