You can't ask journalists to leave #xitter and then tell them there's nowhere else that everyone is welcome. The bad place has cultural influence way beyond its size because all of media is there. That mixed conversation leads to the most interesting work. Elon added the dark algos that make people think all of LA is up in flames etc, but unless we offer a real alternative, they're staying. Without algos, vastly different views can coexist and not bother each other.

imo the "public convo space" thing is basically a natural monopoly. I call that social media and not social networking, but anyway...

#xitter is still that place. it holds that kind of power. but bluesky came on the scene with VC momentum, approaching it like a sprint or wave. they'd either grow fast and win, or slow down and people would go back to X. people look at usage stats now and fear the latter is happening.

#ActivityPub has always taken a marathon approach. slow and steady adoption.

It's nice being able to see posts from #xitter via bird.makeup and the few on #threads who federate and fully communicate with those on #bluesky who bridge. But c'mon people.
