RS, Author, Novelist, Prosaist<p><strong><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/PennedPossibilities" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>PennedPossibilities</span></a> 765 — Are there any words that you’re actively trying to use less often (or replace) in your writing?</strong></p><p>Yes.</p><p>And for reasons that are far different than most will say that they do.</p><p>The story takes place in a time far different from our world, separated from us by a singularity event, posing interesting mysteries, some of which as an author I don't know the answer to, <em>and why should I limit myself?</em> </p><p>I avoid using measurements we are familiar with because there is no way those terms would have survived to the current age. No seconds, minutes, hours, though day and year exist. Default quantities are twelves, dozens not tens. I'm rethinking using decade and centuries, or just <em>twelving</em> their quantities. Lengths are all keyed to one specific human body as measured five centuries prior to the current WiP, but in use these are fairly transparent. Consider what a standard height might be, or a hands width. For some reason I decided to keep league, but it corresponds the distance a standard fit adult person could walk in a standard interval, roughly 5½ km or a slightly less the 3½ miles.</p><p>Words like "inching along" become problematic.</p><p>Sounds complicated on first blush? Since I avoid measurements unless needed, in practice, the terms come off as self explanatory in the narrative.</p><blockquote><p>Something thumped on the top of the [private railroad] car. Heartbeats later, Emeraline [a day angel] dropped through the hatchway. Red blood still wet her wings, but much of it was brown now, crusting. Some flaked off, sifting to the walkway…</p></blockquote><p>Did you notice the substitution for "seconds"? How about here? </p><blockquote><p>…<em>Gelding Knife</em> [the name the devil-girl uses as a prizefighter] is a standard welterweight by mixed gender rules [," the coach finished explaining to the reporters.]</p><p>"I'll fight him," came out of my mouth, even as I wiped away spittle from my rabid dog imitation.</p><p>Shocked silence greeted me. MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History August 22, 1791: Encouraged by the French and American revolutions, Toussaint Louverture led over 100,000 Haitian slaves in a revolt against the French. They were ultimately successful, making Haiti the first black republic in the world. The US refused recognition of Haiti until 1865, as a result of pressure from Southern slaveholders. The French demanded $21 billion In today’s dollars) in reparations for the losses to the former slaveholders, in exchange for peace and recognition of Haiti as an independent nation. The debt was financed through French banks and the U.S. bank, Citibank. The Haitians finally paid it off in 1947. However, the huge interest payments for their independence debt, and the debt incurred through the corruption of the Duvalier dynasty, have made Haiti one of the poorest nations in the western hemisphere. Prior to independence, Haiti was the richest and most productive of all of Europe’s colonies.</p><p>The best book I’ve read on the Haitian Revolution is “The Black Jacobins,” by Trinidadian socialist C.L.R. James. Cuban writer Alejo Carpentier explores the revolution in his novel, “The Kingdom of This World” (1949). Robert Kingett<p>Hey other writers, what do you all use for beta comments? I like using Google docs, but I’ve had a lot of reports from beta readers recently that are saying that Google docs is slow to a crawl when opening very large documents, but that’s how I typically write text files. I’ve already talked about breaking it up via chapters and just putting it in a folder, but is there any other platform you all use? MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History August 16, 1819: Police attacked unemployed workers demonstrating in St. Peter's Field, Manchester, England. When the cavalry charged, at least 18 people died and over 600 were injured. The event became known as the Peterloo Massacre, named for the Battle of Waterloo, where many of the massacre victims had fought just four years earlier. Following the Napoleonic Wars there was an acute economic slump, terrible unemployment and crop failures, all worsened by the Corn Laws, which kept bread prices high. Only 11% of adult males had the vote. Radical reformers tried to mobilize the masses to force the government to back down. The movement was particularly strong in the north-west, where the Manchester Patriotic Union organized the mass rally for Peter’s Field. As soon as the meeting began, local magistrates tried to arrest working class radical, Henry Hunt, and several others. Hunt inspired the Chartist movement, which came shortly after Peterloo.</p><p>John Lees, who later died from wounds he received at the massacre, had been present at the Battle of Waterloo. Before his death, he said that he had never been in such danger as at Peterloo: "At Waterloo there was man to man, but there it was downright murder." In the wake of the massacre, the government passed the Six Acts, to suppress any further attempts at radical reform. The event also led indirectly to the founding of the Manchester Guardian newspaper.</p><p>Percy Bysshe Shelley wrote about the massacre in his poem, “The Masque of Anarchy.” The authorities censored it until 1832, ten years after his death. Mike Leigh’s 2018 film Peterloo is an excellent portrayal of the massacre, and the events leading up to it. Many writers have written novels about Peterloo, including the relatively recent “Song of Peterloo,” by Carolyn O'Brien, and “All the People,” Jeff Kaye. Spooky Panda 🇺🇦<p>"The Razor and the Balm" is finally done! I'm feeling proud. 🩶 </p><p>Let's go back a bit. This was an idea that hit me one evening and it just needed to be written. It would have been far too long to post as a standalone, so I decided to break it up into chapters, as you guys know. My girlfriend, <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mindly.social/@aperfectsong" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>aperfectsong</span></a></span>, helped me with the rest. MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History August 12, 1936: The First International Brigades arrived in Spain to fight against Franco. Organized by the Communist International, between 40,000 and 60,000 men and women from around the world fought on the Republican side against the fascists. 10,000 of them died. Thousands more international activists joined anti-Stalinist forces, like the socialist POUM, or anarchist groups, like the FAI, CNT and the Durruti Column. Americans defied federal law to participate in the International Brigade, as members of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade. Famous Lincoln participants included Avant Garde composer Conlon Nancarrow, labor organizer Delmer Berg, scifi author Theodore Cogswell, novelist William Herrick. The Tom Mooney Company, named for San Francisco labor organizer, Tom Mooney, who was wrongly imprisoned for the WWI Preparedness Day bombing, was commanded by African American labor organizer Oliver Law, the first African-American to command an integrated American military unit. Many African-Americans joined the anti-franco forces. Langston Hughes, who was writing for the Baltimore Afro-American, said: "Give Franco a hood, and he would be a member of the Ku Klux Klan." There was also a George Washington Battlian, and a John Brown battery. Once the U.S. entered World War II, the FBI recommended that none of the veterans of the Spanish war against fascism be given any promotions within the U.S. military, to prevent the “rise of communists” in their ranks.
