#Russian missiles that are based in #Crimea can reach almost anywhere in #Europe.

#Russia used #Crimea as one of its main grounds for its participation in the war in #Syria (cruise missile strikes on land targets and supplying military equipment via sea).

In the years of occupation, #Russia has turned #Crimea into a military base.

There are nuclear storage and service facilities in #Crimea that were built back in the #USSR. No doubt, these have been restored and kept in order by #Russia.

Currently taking my time to read this scintillating and heartbreaking work, Second Hand Time by Svetlana Alexievich. A huge (700 page) distillation of so many monologues from women (and some men) who reminisce, idolise/idealise and grieve about life before the fall of the Soviet Union. The voices are those of the subjects, but she weaves a fascinating cloth from it all.

Why a political appointee can order scientists around regarding science that is decades old and well understood is beyond me.

They are truly modern-day apparatchiks; people placed into positions simply because they praise the leader, with no knowledge or understanding of their departments.
