“They [portray] people who are really opening the conversation around biological sex and #gender as crazy. It’s just like, ‘Oh, those are the woke people. Those are those people who are pushing gender ideology. You can’t listen to them. They’re the ones who are coming for your kids.’” texasobserver.org/texas-lege-p

The Texas Observer · Texas Republicans Push to Define Biological Sex in Statute “If biological sex were as obvious as lawmakers keep insisting that biological sex is, we wouldn’t be here.”

Missouri voters **just passed** this amendment in November 2024. For citizens, getting an initiative on the ballot is labor intensive - I spent a couple weekends last spring gathering signatures in mid-Missouri because the requirements are extensive and precise. Yet our #Republican dominated legislature can place issues on the ballot with a simple majority vote, regardless of how ill-conceived or contrary to just-expressed voter wishes, and we have to fight all over again. Bonus: this ballot proposal contains anti-trans bait unrelated to abortion but designed to use #transphobia to hurt women/pregnant people. But #trans folks are the real threat to women??? #abortion #MOPol #USPol #Missouri.

New from Joelle DiPaolo: Republicans are at it again, trying to mandate the gender binary by law. Despite claiming to have science on their side, these legislators often eschew scientific facts, leaving intersex, transgender, and non-binary people in limbo when they do not fit into neatly legislated boxes. texasobserver.org/texas-lege-p

#GOP lawmakers seek more #StateLaws on #transgender people

Bathrooms. Medical care. Sports. The definition of "male" & "female." In state legislatures this spring, #Republicans have kept a focus on transgender people. They have filed hundreds of restrictive bills.

The majority don't pass, like the majority of all bills. But dozens have, acc/to groups tracking anti-#trans bills. And, even when they don't pass, they can force votes to drive debate.

New from me at Austin Free Press: Among the bills up for a vote today, HB 778, which has already passed the Senate, could make gender-affirming care prohibitively expensive, or even impossible to access for some residents due to how it could affect insurance.

Ash Hall, a #LGBTQIA+ policy analyst for the ACLU of #Texas, said “This is designed to target trans #healthcare and to kind of be a death by 1,000 cuts in terms of how we are able to access care.” austinfreepress.org/rally-at-t

New from me Austin Free Press: Local advocates for equality are fighting back as the rights of #LGBTQIA+ Texans are under attack again at the #Texas Legislature – including bills up for a key House vote today.

Democrats and queer allies will do their best to stem the bleeding. austinfreepress.org/rally-at-t

Gender policing, attacks on trans folks, bathroom gender laws, do NOT protect cis women. They are sexist & fascistic, and they actually worsen the oppression of all women, including both cis and trans women, as seen by the recent harassment of a cis lesbian couple at a Boston hotel, the attacks on Algerian boxing gold medalist Imane Khelif, and the cis woman arrested for using a Walmart bathroom in Arizona.

Nobody is free until we all are free!
