Martin Rundkvist<p>In 1951, <a href="https://archaeo.social/tags/Tolkien" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Tolkien</span></a> rewrites his first Middle-Earth story from 1917 for the fourth and final time. He struggles to make sense of Tuor's aimless hiking.</p><p>In this version, first published in Unfinished Tales (1980) we see Tolkien at the height of his LotR powers, treating his early meandering tale as a dependable but badly incomplete historical source. He adds a lot of needed motivation. But keeps his old hero still hiking around!</p><p><a href="https://archaeo.social/tags/fantasy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>fantasy</span></a></p>

Martin Rundkvist<p>In "The Hobbit" and LotR, <a href="https://archaeo.social/tags/Tolkien" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Tolkien</span></a> made constant reference to the as yet unpublished Silmarillion, creating an intriguing sense of historical depth. But in the first piece of Silmarillion writing from 1917, he did exactly the same thing -- but he was referring to something that hadn't even been written yet!</p><p><a href="https://archaeo.social/tags/books" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>books</span></a> <a href="https://archaeo.social/tags/writing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writing</span></a></p>

Martin Rundkvist<p>There's a day in 1930 when <a href="https://archaeo.social/tags/Tolkien" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Tolkien</span></a> decides after 13 years of writing, "Fuck it, I'm just gonna sink Beleriand under the sea! Nogrod and Belegost can become coastal cities!"</p><p>This is however not the point when he decides to draw a map of what's east of the Ered Luin and start writing about that area instead.</p><p>* 1930. Let Beleriand sink.</p><p>* 1930-32. Write The Hobbit, set in "Wilderland" in some other world.</p><p>* Later. Decide that actually, Wilderland is just east of the Silmarillion map.</p><p><a href="https://archaeo.social/tags/books" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>books</span></a></p>
Martin Rundkvist<p>A very odd aspect of The Fall of Gondolin is that though it's <a href="https://archaeo.social/tags/Tolkien" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Tolkien</span></a> 's first piece of Middle-Earth writing, he's referring in passing to a lot of other Silmarillion material as if he'd already written it. Though by all accounts he had not. It seems he had something corresponding to the first 100 pages of the published Silmarillion in his head when he sat down to write TFoG in January 1917.</p><p><a href="https://archaeo.social/tags/books" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>books</span></a></p>
Martin Rundkvist<p><a href="https://archaeo.social/tags/Tolkien" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Tolkien</span></a> starts writing what will become the Silmarillion in 1917 and finishes his last complete version of it in 1930. Very soon he then starts writing the playful children's book "The Hobbit" which alludes to bits of the long tragic work but is not originally intended to be set in the same world. Manuscript finished in 1932. So the writer who refers to Gondolin in The Hobbit is using what's top of mind, not looking back at something long abandoned.</p><p><a href="https://archaeo.social/tags/books" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>books</span></a> <a href="https://archaeo.social/tags/fantasy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>fantasy</span></a></p>
