A detailed update of Taiwan's great recall campaign (大罷免) by Frozen Garlic. It's the first time Taiwan has had such a large recall campaign so it could produce some interesting results

"In short, I don’t think it is impossible that the DPP could find itself with a majority in the legislature in November."

Frozen Garlic · The continuing recall sagaFor several weeks it seemed like there was no new news on the recalls, and then suddenly there was an avalanche and I quickly fell behind. So let’s try to recap. First round In the first round, rec…

Must read explainer on Taiwan's constitutional crisis by Kharis Templeman

"...the current confrontation is a foreseeable consequence of Taiwan's constitutional framework, which despite going through several rounds of reforms is still an awkward mash-up of presidential and parliamentary features that isn't well-designed to handle periods of divided government."

Kharis Templeman (祁凱立)Taiwan Is on the Brink of a Constitutional CrisisAnd maybe a fiscal one, too. And no, it has nothing to do with China.

Protesters gathered outside the Legislative Yuan in Taipei last night to protest against the KMT and TPP's attempts to freeze the Constitutional Court

The protest was part of the Bluebird Movement (青鳥行動) which started in May this year in response to the KMT and TPP's attempts to expand the powers of the legislature. Parts of the legislative reform bill passed in May were later found to be unconstitutional

Michael Turton on how the TPP has hindered the development of a genuine alternative third party in Taiwan

"Ko lacked the patience, organizational aptitude and humility to engage in long-term party construction. Taiwan lost a great opportunity for political growth when he turned out to be another populist fly-by-night. Under arrest for alleged corruption, he has likely reinforced the views of many disgruntled voters that all parties are the same: broken."

台北時報 · Notes from Central Taiwan: The Ko disasterBy 台北時報
Continued thread

But the #TPP has no choice really as its entire platform was based on good governance, anti-corruption and the personality of #KoWenJe.
Good governance went overboard with the entire accounting mess of the party's finances and the way the TPP reacted to this.
Anti-#corruption went overboard with the #CorePacific dealings.
So Ko really is the last cornerstone of the TPP's platform that is left. Not a solid foundation to say the least. #Taiwan #politics

As #KoWenje has been arrested and is being held incommunicado by prosecutors as a suspect in the #CorePacific #corruption case, he and the #TPP as his cult have launched a full-scale attack on the #judiciary, lamenting about a political prosecution.
By pulling the Trump victim card, Ko and the TPP are hurting the #ruleofLaw and the independent judiciary in #Taiwan. They are putting themselves and the party first, not the country. Which is more than just a pity. focustaiwan.tw/politics/202409

@gentoobro @Dudebro @Aly @James_Dixon @Kalogerosstilitis2RevengeoftheJunta @Hoss we might get there but in order to do that we need to get rid of the #TPP and other such treaties which will interfere with that

ocean shipping *does* contribute to the problem and should be dealt with but
1) putting a dumb tarriff only solves the problem if the shipping companies don't adapt
2) most of the problem isn't shipping. And certainly not per capita.

And the ban on private jets might be ok for other reasons (covid) but honestly that's an extreme measure that, again, we might get there but we should use less extreme measures first (making sure private jets pay carbon tax on the fuel they use, which we do in canada, and which the conservatives here freak out about).

The photo says that there is already a crowd of 10,000 people outside the Legislative Yuan in Taipei. The crowd will continue to build in the afternoon and evening. People are protesting against the KMT and TPP's attempts to force through legislation that would undermine Taiwan's democracy by granting sweeping powers to Taiwan's legislature.
