Fantoft #StaveChurch (or Fortun kyrkje, as it was originally actually called), in the 1880s.

Nowadays most known for getting burned down and rebuilt in the 1990s, the church originally stood in Fortun in Sogn, but was moved to #Bergen in 1883.

My #MidweekMuseum today is the Norsk Folkemuseum (or Norwegian Museum of Cultural History) at Bygdøy in Oslo, Norway. It's an open-air museum housing dozens of historical buildings relocated to this area for preservation, and home of the Gol Stave Church (circa 1200 CE), one of three stave churches we've now visited in Norway when travelling. Who doesn't love a stave church?

A tall but narrow stave church; a medieval, wooden building comprising tapering tiers climbing quickly to pointed roofs. We're looking at the rear of the church where a smaller, three-tiered section is rounded, rather than square-based. The wooden part of the church is seated on a stone base of large blocks about a metre and a half in height in total. The wood is all very dark brown, close to black with the protective layers applied to it over the centuries. It looks very old and a little ominous, not helped by the foreboding, cloudy sky with billowing patches of darker cloud that seem to threaten rain. The church is on a slight hilly rise surrounded by grass and lush trees.

An old building; probably a grain store as it's a wooden building raised up from the ground on a smaller wooden-timbered base. The building is approximately cube-shaped with a shallow, peaked roof, and from our angle on the ground looking slightly up at it we can just see tufts of grass peeking over the roof edges. The wood is dark, almost taking on a burnt look, and likely indicating treatment it's received over the years to protect it from the elements. Very small windows are set in the front face; five lower down, then two above, and all about the size of a head.

A field of tall grass dotted with wildflowers stretches across a short distance to a grouping of half a dozen old houses constructed on wooden beams and all with shallow roofs topped with grass. No two buildings are the same, with each adjacent building either lower or longer or squatter than its neighbours. Beyond the buildings some tall trees form a border under a grey, moody sky.

The Nordic Chapel in the #Lütetsburg #Castle #Park was built in 1802. The polygonal building made of raw wood looks gloomy even during the day. It does not look like a classical chapel with its over 600-year-old Nordic #stavechurch design. When you enter the chapel, it seems very dark at first, but then the heaviness is lifted. The paintings on the walls resemble Greek Roman marble works with Gothic cut high windows. The inscription in the dome reads "Nature and Virtue Lead to God."
This chapel was built by a Norwegian company. It's a perfect place for hot days since it is very cool inside.
