Recently, I made this spinach and feta puff pastry that was to die for, and I've been known to...</p><p>Wait. That's not the kind of app you're talking about, is it?</p><p>😉</p><p>No, I've never made an app. I leave most things technology to my very talented (and incredibly patient) husband, <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://infosec.exchange/@securingdev" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>securingdev</span></a></span>.</p><p>(Sorry, feeling silly. It's my birthday, please forgive me.)</p>

But I was a professional software engineer for more than 40 years, and I made all sorts of things...</p><p>In the early 80s the engineers at Xerox said that I had written the first laser printer driver they knew of that was not intended for printing code or accounting data. (It supported a pre-personal-computer word processor.)<br>I later worked on an SGML editor for IBM before HTML was defined.</p>

What subjects or moments do you find most captivating to capture?</p><p>I find it weird now how when I see some lovely bit of nature my first thought is to take a picture. I used to just savor it quietly. I'm still not sure if this change is good or bad, but I enjoy sharing sights that give me pleasure &amp; people seem to enjoy them with me. I guess it's made my world more social, though lessened times of contemplation.</p>
Emma Cox<p><a href="https://writing.exchange/tags/ScribesAndMakers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ScribesAndMakers</span></a> </p><p>Personally, I feel photography has moved away from capturing memorably shots, be they powerful or intimate, and are now trophies to put on social media. </p><p>Users "curate" (I hate that word) their stylised life to show off. They "hunt" down those viral locations just to shoot a photo to stick on their feed to prove they've been there. I live near such places and it saddens me how most hang around long enough to take a social media photo and then leave. They don't engage. (2/2)</p>

It forces you to explore a subject from different vantages. An arsenal of lenses allow you to see the world differently. I carry this into other areas. Can I perceive something from another person's point of view? </p><p>(1/2)</p>

Do you consider repair work creative? Why? Yes, I do. I started doing visible mending last year and it’s definitely creative. I combine cyanotypes I make with embroidery and it makes my clothes a kind of scrapbook that I wear. On this pair of jeans, I have a memory of hibiscus I got on a trip to Mexico, bougainvillea from the side of my house, and a shadow through a colander during a partial eclipse.</p>

Ranging beyond the status quo. Shaking things up. Trusting your own instincts to bring something into the world we've not quite seen before.</p>
RS, Author, Novelist, Prosaist<blockquote><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/ScribesAndMakers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ScribesAndMakers</span></a> 2025.05.02 — If you paint, do you have “recipes” or tricks for mixing colors, or do you eyeball it?</p></blockquote><p>I paint with light. My two main recipes is to recognize bright colors on a dim background (which will render black in posts) or to recognize contrasting colors that will render a bright foreground (orange, purple, yellow, white) against a contrasting background (usually blue, brown, or green). Though it's a bit harder, I try to imagine the scene as bright against dark, as monochrome. This renders as either painterly (low contrast) or blown out (solarized). I do these things instinctively without having to raise the camera. Lots can be fixed in post. </p><p>Technique described in <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/altText" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>altText</span></a>. </p><p>[Author and photographer retains copyright (c)2025 R.S.]</p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/BoostingIsSharing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BoostingIsSharing</span></a> and <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/CommentingIsCool" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>CommentingIsCool</span></a></p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/gender" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>gender</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/fiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>fiction</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writer</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/author" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>author</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/photographer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>photographer</span></a><br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writing</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writingcommunity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writingcommunity</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writersOfMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writersOfMastodon</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writers</span></a><br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/RSdiscussion" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RSdiscussion</span></a> <br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/photgraphy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>photgraphy</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/photo" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>photo</span></a></p>
