Flipboard Science Desk<p>What does it feel like to be a science journalist — or any kind of journalist — in the USA right now? Talia Lavin talked to Deborah Blum, director of the Knight Science Journalism Center at MIT, a specialist in toxicology, and the woman who literally wrote the book on the history of U.S. food regulations. "As a country, we tend to suffer from what I think of as regulatory memory failure. We don't have a sense of what things were like before regulations went into play. Most Americans don't really have a sense of what the environmental landscape of the United States looked like before the EPA, for instance," says Blum. "Instead, we demonize regulation, when often we're really talking about consumer protection. And when we're talking consumer protection, we're talking about protection for every American citizen. But until you have those kinds of universal standards in place, the people who suffer the most are going to be the people who can't afford the good stuff."</p><p><a href="https://flip.it/EEAN0S" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">flip.it/EEAN0S</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p><p><a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/Journalism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Journalism</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/ScienceJournalism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ScienceJournalism</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/Media" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Media</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/FoodSafety" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>FoodSafety</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/RFK" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RFK</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/EPA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>EPA</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/Regulation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Regulation</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/USA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>USA</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/USPolitics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>USPolitics</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/TrumpAdministration" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>TrumpAdministration</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/Food" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Food</span></a></p>

AskPippa🇨🇦<p>The SWCC (formerly the <a href="https://c.im/tags/Canadian" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Canadian</span></a> Science Writers' Association) is mulling over the idea of doing a single, on-demand print version of the book 'From Typewriters to Twitter: Celebrating 50 Years of Science Writing' that I edited and wrote much of. Looking at possibly doing an on-demand print-run if enough interest is expressed (previous responses to a call for interest were lost due to email issues and staff turnover). <br>The cost of the books would be set to cover the costs of printing and shipping. Likely about $20-$30CDN plus shipping, for a bound paperback, limited edition. Price depends on the overall number ordered. </p><p>Some of you had a chance to see the PDF version. But who is interested in ordering a print version to grace your shelves? </p><p>I was managing editor and did much of the writing -- along with a great team. Many familiar names in science journalism contributed to this project. It also covers the origin of the CSWA -- as a Canadian branch of the <a href="https://c.im/tags/NASW" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>NASW</span></a>.</p><p>Please let the association know if you would order a copy, and how many. If there is enough interest then an ordering process could be set up. Once they know who is interested, this will inform the SWCC's decision, and if they go ahead they can can contact you directly.</p><p>If you know others who would be interested, share this note.</p><p>Yes! I would order X number of copies!
