This is quite true. A better method is to sit on them. If the melon feels really hard against your butt, it is not ripe yet. If it collapses, it is overripe. You want to find the sweet spot, where it does not collapse, but it has a little bounce in it. That's when you know you got a melon that is just right, and can be used as a chair.
