Manipulating the market

I was unaware that a ‘vulture’ funds bought into Thames at 60%

The market value of the debt is already implying 30% writedowns. Some of the opportunistic vulture funds are thought to have got in at as low as 60p in the pound; Reed and Ofwat, the water regulator for England and Wales, would look like fools if they approved, in effect, hefty day-one paper profits for them.

Having previously entered into settlements with Washington, D.C. and Illinois, Doordash has now agreed in a settlement with NY AG Letitia James to distribute $16.8 million to its New York State employees whose tips it stole. It’s a start. Still, I wish I used Doordash so I could stop using Doordash.

Regulation works. You can thank the @EUCommission for some important Windows changes, where Edge will nag you less.

I wish these were worldwide.

Still needs to be easier for users to set their preferred default browser. It used to be that the browser could ask you and if you allowed it, it would be set as default. It seems like you still have to go into the settings to change this.

@sundogplanets

Congrats on your publication! 👍

"...we need *fewer* satellites, each with *longer* operational lifetimes. Engineers: that's your challenge."

Seems to me that it could also be a #governance challenge. The #Space near #Earth is basically a village green. Putting junk up there willy-nilly could be considered a form of #pollution. We know that pollution CANNOT be controlled by #free_markets.

Just sayin'...🤷‍♂️

Edit: Above responding to your TLDR. Reading deeper you end with...

"Without far-reaching, international #regulation or self-imposed limits from satellite companies, current practices in LEO threaten the planet, and our ability to explore beyond it."

Agreed!

Q

Does anyone know a good book (not an edited volume) on the Volkswagen emissions scandal?

The scandal is a shocking but fascinating example of greed and of a failure of regulation. I have followed the news over the years. But I’d love to read an overview and an analysis.

How could it go so wrong? Can we draw lessons on hot to prevent such things? Etc.

Thanks!

The #FlintWaterCrisis began in 2014, when the city, while under emergency management from the state, switched water sources from the #Detroit Water & Sewerage Dept to the #Flint River as a cost-cutting measure. The EPA had been monitoring stricter lead-level standards in Flint's drinking water since 2016.

The order, put in place after the #FlintWaterCrisis, was lifted after federal ofcls said the city has reached compliance with safe #DrinkingWater requirements.

In a statement, EPA Administrator #LeeZeldin called the lifting of the emergency order a major milestone for the city & federal partners.

Who would have thought that anyone would think it is a good idea to ban regulation of AI and algorithmic content? This is a seriously bad idea.

I continue to believe that we should ban user profiling and the use of user profiles for advertising and content algorithms. Given where we are, I think that is the right thing to do and I think more and more are seeing that as the only way to solve the issues we have today.
