Thanks to @NatureMC (mastodon.online/@NatureMC/1141), we discovered Postcrossing, a nice online platform for sending and receiving postcards.

This platform was founded in 2005 in Portugal by Paulo Magalhaes 🇵🇹.

He loved receiving postcards and letters in his mailbox, but didn't know how to make it happen, so he created Postcrossing as a side project.

20 years later, more than 80 million real postcards have been sent through the platform! 😵

Postcrossing has more than 800.000 members from all over the world! 👏

It's free and incredibly simple to participate: you just need to subscribe, get a random address, send a postcard to this person and when they receive it, they must indicate that in the platform.

After that, your address will be randomly sent to someone else, and a few days later, you'll receive a surprise postcard in your mailbox!

So why not stop scrolling and go send a postcard of your city or country to someone, anywhere in the world? ✍️

"Tête á Tête on the 968th Floor of a Skyscraper," Moriz Jung, 1911.

Jung (1885-1915) was an Austrian artist, graphic designer, and caricaturist best known for his work with the Wiener Werkstätte, a Viennese art and design collective.

Noted for his satirical flair, he had quite a few illustrations published in various magazines, and also a lot of humorous postcards like this one, which pokes fun at the stylish fad for aviation.

I've written about the Wiener Werkstätte before; their output is fascinating and their work a forerunner of the Bauhaus and the Art Deco movement. Postcards were the lest pricy or luxurious of their output, but images like there were popular.

Jung's career, though prolific, was brief. He was conscripted into the Austro-Hungarian army in 1914, and was killed in action near the village of Łubne, in modern-day Poland, as part of the Carpathian Battle.
