Yeah, that was a bit of all right
Oh, Aurora, you tease.
Just after sunset it looked as if we might be in for quite a show in southern Michigan. Then the Bz (the polarity) of the incoming storm flipped, and it faded away. There’s still hope for later tonight if conditions change, but this was the best of my test shots tonight.
9:12 pm EDT, September 1, 2025. Wolverine Lake, Michigan.
My friend getting her shots and a creepy aurora face

It is definitely aurora season
"Sloping Glacier"
Fláajökull with Vatnajökull behind it, under a canopy of #AuroraBorealis and stars.
Höfn in Hornafjörður, south-eastern #Iceland is a recognised dark sky area.
On the left is Corona Borealis (Northern Crown) next to Boötes (Ploughman) and part of Ursa Major (Big Dipper/Plough) is at the top right.
I use a longer exposure on my #NorthernLights shots, as it captures more starlight. This is 8 seconds.
They’re very faint, but they’re shining!

I am a somewhat frequent traveler for work reasons. If I have leg space, I always sit on the window, away from the sunny side. This is one of the tricks to a calmer flight and night.
Flying back from #Tokyo #Haneda to #Munich, only the right side was free. Good if we fly under Russia, OK if we fly over the Artic. Decent enough sun activity to have a chance at #Northernlights. It's a night flight. Or so I thought...
The #boeing787 has dimmable windows, not physical shades. It's summer solstice.
Once again, the aurora numbers (Kp) crashed as the US West Coast got to astronomical twilight. Luckily, I hadn't started the drive out of the city lights. But if any of us decide to go out for an attempt to catch aurora, we have to take an attitude of accepting risk that it might not happen when we get to the viewing spot. https://www.spaceweather.gov/communities/aurora-dashboard-experimental #SpaceWeather #aurora #NorthernLIghts #AuroraBorealis #AuroraAustralis #astronomy
"G3 Warning Extended Through 03 Jun 2025" by NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center - Continued CME activity from the Sun leads to extension of G3 geomagnetic storm alert through 0900 2025-06-03 UTC. G3 equates to Kp=7. https://www.spaceweather.gov/news/g3-warning-extended-through-03-jun-2025 #SpaceWeather #aurora #NorthernLIghts #AuroraBorealis #AuroraAustralis #astronomy
The SoftServe aurora forecast thinks the storm is crash-ending right now if you didn't already get pictures. Keep monitoring but set expectations lower. https://www.softservenews.com/Aurora.htm #SpaceWeather #aurora #NorthernLIghts #AuroraBorealis #AuroraAustralis #astronomy
Now that it's dark on the West Coast, I've been watching to see if the aurora are likely to get down to Oregon. I would need Kp=7+. Currently it's Kp=5. Watching. If it goes above 6 I'll take a risk on it and drive out of the city lights to try to get pictures. https://www.spaceweather.gov/communities/aurora-dashboard-experimental #SpaceWeather #aurora #NorthernLIghts #AuroraBorealis #AuroraAustralis #astronomy
There's a chance of seeing the #aurora tonight, possibly as far south as the Midland and Wales
Most likely though, the #northernlights will be visible for Scotland, northern England and Northern Ireland, where clear skies allow

Hey! Go look at the sky!

A cloudy night in November, but the #aurora can't be completely hidden.
The Green Dancer will always win.
It’s a year ago tonight that I was fortunate to witness one of the best displays of the Aurora Borealis that I have seen. The amazing thing is that this was mainly present in the southern sky with the whole southern arc lit up with the bold colours and easily visibly to the naked eye. Amazing stuff and a memorable night #Aurora #NorthernLights #Aberdeenshire #Scotland
On this #FlashbackFriday look back at the historic solar storm of May 10th last year, a rare, magical alignment of Big Dipper with the dazzling Corona Borealis.

Had some spectacular northern lights two days ago
The glow is still here today but sadly no arcs or glow that's easily seen by the eyes
I might have captured something much better if I'd been paying attention to the aurora tracking sites. Kind of lucked out. Didn't think I saw anything but I did a bunch of long exposure photos and this one time lapse. Despite all the city lights and the limited extent of the aurora, you can just make out a tiny wave.
