“Badlands Formations” — A pattern of badlands ridges and gullies in early morning light, Death Valley.

I don’t always photograph at Zabriskie Point — in fact, it was sort of an accident that I ended up there this February. But when I stop there I am always intrigued by the nearly limitless opportunities to photograph small details in the nearby badlands. There are two times of day when I like to photograph this subject. In the harsh midday light, the shadows can produce strong contrasts between the bright and dark elements. But early morning light softens the features, fills in the shadows, and sometimes introduces the reflected colors of the sky…continues: gdanmitchell.com/2025/04/25/ba

Zion National Park - Virgin River Valley View

As the golden light of late afternoon gently kisses the sandstone cliffs, the majesty of Zion National Park reveals itself in full glory. This image captures one of the most iconic views in the American Southwest—the Virgin River gracefully winding its way through the dramatic canyon.

“First Light, Panamint Mountains” — The first sunrise light on Rogers Peak and the Panamint Mountains, Death Valley National Park.

How many times have I watched for this first light as it touches the peaks and ridges of the Panamint Mountains before working its way down to the floor of Death Valley? I have no idea, but I’ve been going there for something like 25 years now, so it must be quite a few times! It never gets old…continues: gdanmitchell.com/2025/04/23/fi

“Morning Dunes” — Death Valley sand dnes in early moorning light.

On my late-February visit to Death Valley I only photographed the dunes on one morning. The dunes are a wonderful subject, but there are lots of other things to see and photograph in this park, and photographing those subjects didn’t leave me much time for the dunes. But it would seem wrong not to visit them at least once! I arrived well before sunrise, loaded up a pack, and walked out in the dim pre-dawn light to look for a good spot to use as a my vantage point…continues: gdanmitchell.com/2025/04/19/mo

“The Manifold, Detail” — Close photograph of a section of the Manifold formation, Death Valley National Park.

Even though this photograph only shows a very small area of a much larger formation, there’s a good chance that those of you familiar with Death Valley will recognize it. The feature is called “The Manifold,” and it features ribs of soft, light-colored material stretching out from beneath a layer of darker material. For this photograph I narrowed the angle of view to only include a very small part of the larger feature…continues: gdanmitchell.com/2025/04/17/th

Badlands National Park Wall South Dakota

So this whole purpose of this trip was:
1. To get away from normal life and to get refreshed a little bit.
2. To hike.
3. To learn some new techniques...
4. And to capture a certain picture that I had in my minds eye.

“At the Edge of the Salt Flats” — Panamint mountains tower above as a small wash runs to the edge of the salt flats, Death Valley,

During my late-February visit to Death Valley National Park I spent two early mornings photographing this location. It is generally most interesting at dawn, when the morning light shines on the distant Panamint Mountains, so I was there well before sunrise. In order to find ideal locations here you really have to scout ahead of time. On the first of the two visits I slightly missed my target location in the darkness. I still got photographs, but before my return on the last morning of my trip, I checked it one more time and determined that following this runoff gully would get me where I needed to be…continues: gdanmitchell.com/2025/04/15/at

Crater Lake Oregon A Deep Blue Wonder of Nature

Right in the heart of southern Oregon's Cascade Mountains, Crater Lake is a breathtaking natural marvel, known for its intense sapphire-blue waters, remarkable clarity, and dramatic geological history. Formed over 7,000 years ago by the collapse of the ancient Mount Mazama volcano.

“Salt Flats to Mountain Peaks” — Snow-covered Telescope and Rogers Peaks and the Panamint Mountains tower above Death Valley salt flats in morning shadows.

It still seems odd to find water flowing here, but out on the salt flats of Death Valley it does flow at all times of the year. It is extremely shallow and it moves very slowly — but the amount of moisture out there is still impressive. Hint: don’t walk on these flats — you aren’t going to enjoy the thick mud on your shoes, the sensation of sinking into it, or the tracks you leave behind…continues: gdanmitchell.com/2025/04/10/sa

Winter Beauty Yosemite National Park Tunnel View

snowstorm swept through the valley, dressing the granite giants in a delicate veil of white. From Tunnel View, the world opened like a dream—El Capitan standing watchful to the left, Bridalveil Fall flowing like silver lace to the right, and Half Dome rising distant and proud, crowned in snow.
