"Japan is the only country in the world that legally requires married couples to share the same family name — and that creates considerable problems for scientists, according to a survey of more than 7,500 researchers in the country.

The survey found that the naming law created confusion for researchers when obtaining patents, academic qualifications and applying for research grants..."

What are you devices (laptops, phones, servers, etc.) named after? My theme is greek mythology: gods, heros and monsters.
My PiHole is named after argus, the all-seeing giant. My laptop that I often took on journeys is named odysseus. The home server is named herakles , because of all the different tasks it fulfils.

I also heard of someone using place names of famous disasters like Chernobyl, Hindenburg or Deepeater Horizion.

What‘s your theme?

Boosts appreciated.

@Furthering One of my "advantages" was that I worked in a horticultural company when I was young and later for a specialised publisher for a long time, so I rarely heard the local names.
But it is precisely these native names that tell us stories about #culturalHeritage and how people lived with the #plants. We need #names to talk to them, even if we invent them: cronenburg.net/sweet-lady-viol

And finally, new data from Nameberry says people in red states are giving their kids the classic Jewish name Cohen (sometimes with the spelling Kohen). Our @CultureDesk featured this Forward story by Benyamin Cohen and Mira Fox, who are trying to figure out why. Theories include that people are naming their children after the directing duo the Coen brothers, or that it’s a co-opting by Christians of Jewish traditions. Says Benyamin: “I think it’s clever to give pets human names. We have chickens and each one is named after an NPR broadcaster. We have Terry Gross, Yuki Noguchi, Nina Totenberg and so on. We’re actually on our third Melissa Block. The first two, alas, are in chicken heaven now.” Mira replies: “And they all, of course, have your last name.” Benyamin: “Yes, yes. We call them the Co-Hens. I wonder what Nameberry would think of that.”

A proposal to automatically give babies mother’s last name ignites a row in Italy.

An Italian politician has proposed a law that would make it automatic for babies to be assigned their mother’s last name at birth, a step that would mark a rupture with tradition and has sparked a fiery debate.

Children born in Italy are automatically registered with their father’s last name, unless the father is absent from the child’s life.
