Findings  In this cohort study of more than 141 000 nonhospitalized US veterans who were concurrently tested for all 3 viruses and diagnosed with a single infection between August 2022 and March 2023 or between August 2023 and March 2024, RSV was associated with lower 30-day risk of hospitalization, and COVID-19 was associated with a higher risk of long-term mortality through 180 days.
Meaning  COVID-19 was associated with more severe disease outcomes, including long-term mortality, compared with influenza or RSV.”

Southern #Europe faces double heat mortality from #ClimateChange

The results, published in npj Climate and Atmospheric Science, showed that the number of heat-related deaths per million inhabitants attributed to anthropogenic warming was twice as high in the Southern regions compared to the rest of Europe.

But climate change has not only exacerbated heat-related mortality in exceptionally hot summers as in 2022. According to the study's findings, between 44% and 54% of heat-related summer mortality between 2015 and 2021 can be attributed to global warming. In absolute terms, this corresponds to an annual burden of between 19,000 and 28,000 deaths. By comparison, the figures for 2022 show an alarming 40% increase in heat-related mortality and a two-thirds increase in mortality attributed to anthropogenic warming. "Our study urgently calls on governments and national authorities in Europe to increase the ambition and effectiveness of surveillance and prevention measures, new adaptation strategies, and global mitigation efforts. Without strong action, record temperatures and heat-related mortality will continue to rise in the coming years," says Joan Ballester Claramunt, Principal Investigator of the European Research Council (ERC) Consolidator Grant EARLY-ADAPT.

The idea that "Roe was the reason there was political conflict over abortion" was amazingly widespread.
And, of course, couldn’t possibly be more #wrong:

California surgeon general sets goal of reducing maternal mortality by 50%

California’s surgeon general has unveiled an initiative to reduce #maternal #mortality and set a goal of ❇️ halving the rate of deaths related to pregnancy and birth by December 2026.

Health officials say that more than 80% of maternal deaths nationwide are preventable.

California has achieved a much lower rate of such deaths than the U.S., but ♦️maternal mortality resurged in recent years amid the COVID-19 pandemic, state data show.

“We have the lowest rate in the country. Now we can do better,” California Surgeon General Dr. Diana E. #Ramos said in an interview.

Ramos was joined in announcing the effort Tuesday by First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the wife of Gov. Gavin Newsom.

Bat die-offs in the U.S. led to increased use of insecticides,
which in turn led to greater #infant #mortality, according to a "seminal" study published Thursday that shows the effects of biodiversity loss on human beings.
Eyal Frank, an environmental economist at the University of Chicago, authored the study, which was published by Science, a leading peer-reviewed journal.

✅ Bats can eat thousands of insects per night and act as a natural pest control for farmers,
💥so when a fungal disease began killing off bat populations in the U.S. after being introduced in 2006, farmers in affected counties used more insecticides, Frank found.
🔥Those same counties saw more infant deaths, which Frank linked to increased use of insecticide that is harmful to human health, especially for babies and fetuses
