@bkuhn any advice for choosing #copyleft #licenses for #Rust code?

In a recent thread you mentioned #LGPL and I'm curious about templating.

In my understanding it's not possible for the user to replace just the LGPLd library on their system, so it's effectively the same as #GPL .
I chose #MPL 2.0 instead.

Same problem exists in C++ template-only libraries, but I found no ultimate guide.

Are you aware of any?

At #MPL, researchers explore questions at the interface of ›non-hermitian physics‹ and ›topology‹. The image shows the energies of a 2D lattice as toroidal surfaces above the Brillouin zone. Due to the non-Hermiticity of the underlying model, these surfaces may be glued together at so-called branch cuts. On the torus, the branch cuts can form non-contractible loops.

Structures like these are highly robust against perturbations.

@mitchellh Isn't the EUPL or MPL license something for #Ghostty? Then people can use it in any project, but will the gostty code be free.

The more #opensource #licensing dramas I witness online - the more I am coming to believe that #MPL is objectively the best middle ground for the majority of cases that different interested groups are struggling with.

The code covered is always #copyleft, but it allows linking/embedding into any other code that is not, without contaminating it. And this is, by far, the most sensible and rational approach, in my opinion. A grown-up centrist approach.

privacy policy documents should be like source code licenses.

you see an #MIT you know what you can do there... registering an account on #Apache site? you probably would feel safe under #MPL (Mozilla Public License).

Drew DeVault @drewdevault unilaterally declares the #FSF @fsf and a number of its achievements such as the GPL dead. Now that's something!

As usual, Drew DeVault has some very good points, but the way he makes them is just provocative. Yes, #RMS should finally(!!!) take his hat and yes, the #GPL is "complex". But to then stand up and just throw the #MPL into the ring as a cure for all the GPL's shortcomings is extremely absurd.

#GPL is a mess and a can of worms. If you want to spend your money on dev, rather on feeding a swarm of lawyers, avoid it like hell and go permissive license instead. Or if you absolutely must have #copyleft for your project, prefer #MPL

Ich höre und lese immer wieder „#Copyleft-Lizenzen wie die #GPL sind inkompatibel zu anderen #FOSS-Lizenzen und spalten damit das FOSS-Ökosystem”.

Leider hält sich dieser Mythos noch immer. Aber das Gegenteil ist eigentlich der Fall: Copyleft-Lizenzen garantieren die dauerhafte Beibehaltung von Freiheitsrechten und verhindern proprietäre Forks von #OpenSource-Software.

Wenn euch Kompatibilität mit anderen Lizenzen wichtig ist, dann nutzt die #MPL oder die #EUPL:
