Important advocacy alert 📣 Until August 19, you can give input on a game-changing national standard about masks in healthcare settings (and beyond)!

Long story short: CSA Group (a.k.a. the Canadian Standards Association) is updating their guidance about using respirators in the workplace. Some of the key changes include:

😷 Respirators (like N95 masks) need to be worn by healthcare workers at all times in healthcare facilities and where healthcare services are being performed, except in “exempted zones”
😷 Surgical masks aren’t good enough for workers to use as respiratory protection
😷 Respirators are to be supplied free of charge in healthcare facilities to all occupants

This guidance is open for public comment until August 19th. To make it easier to take part, we've created a plain-language explainer on how to participate, including some sample feedback: donoharmbc.ca/national-standar

It's vital that people give feedback - both to support key improvements, and to point out any gaps to help make this guidance even stronger. We know that CSA Group pays attention to feedback, because past comments helped get key improvements into this draft.

Let's do this!

“You don’t have to wear a mask here”

Ever since hospitals dropped mandates, healthcare workers have been pressuring patients to remove their mask.

They say it’s not needed, it’s safe, “you won’t get covid here”

I watched this happen in a high risk cardiac clinic recently

I was wearing my N99 like I always do, and wasn’t willing to take it off.

I’m used to the questions, eye rolls and stares. I’m confident enough to tell them that my mask won’t be removed for any reason.

But what about those who aren’t as informed?

An elderly woman entered the clinic just after me.

She was wearing the hospital provided surgical mask.

She was trying to protect herself.

They told her “you don’t need that”. She looked confused. Why would the hospital provide them if they weren’t needed?

She said “I don’t mind wearing it” and the healthcare worker refused to drop it.

Told her that it wasn’t necessary and she should remove it.

So she did.

It broke my heart to watch.

This person clearly didn’t want to get sick. She was clearly in a vulnerable group. She was trying to do the right thing.

But she trusted the healthcare worker because they’re supposed to be the experts.

They’re supposed to care about our health.

They’re supposed to protect us

I think of her whenever I see a healthcare worker mocking maskers on social media.

Their anger and vitriol towards patients who mask left me wondering how many times they’ve convinced someone to go without protection.

How many times have they been the reason someone got sick?

A doctor willing to post something like that has given up on even the appearance of caring for their patients.

A good doctor would be encouraging respirator use, not mocking those taking precautions.

This is why we still see so much death and disability from COVID.

Because even those who 100% should know better have decided that the lives of their patients mean less than their own personal comfort.

They’ve decided some death & disability is “acceptable”

It’s not. We can’t accept this as the norm. We shouldn’t be infected in the place we’re forced to go to access care.

Healthcare workers should be leaders. They should be demonstrating how to avoid infection.

They should strive to keep their patients safe.

Clean air and respirators are not a big ask in healthcare settings.

Let’s save lives.

Continued thread

Since healthcare workers largely refuse to mask, hospital acquired Covid is still a very serious risk for many of us.

It also carries a 10% mortality rate.

No one should have to choose between care and Covid.

My guide to avoiding Covid in hospital (the tips apply to other public spaces too!)

RT @unbiasedscipod@threads.com:

»Petition to change the phrase 'natural immunity' to 'survivor immunity.'

'Natural immunity' makes it seem like Mother Nature gently bops Snow White on the nose and magically protects her from future illness... but 'survivor immunity' more accurately conveys that a person first needs to SURVIVE the infection in order to get that protection—and endure all the risks that come with it.«

Prior to Covid it was normal to mask in the NICU. People understood that premature babies are as vulnerable as they come and need to protected.

Now? Gowns & gloves but no masking.

The damage caused by anti mask rhetoric will be felt for years (possibly decades) to come.

Mask mandates belong in healthcare. We should be providing free respirators at the door & cleaning and ventilating the air.

If you’re a healthcare worker who doesn’t think you need to mask, please read my plea on behalf of vulnerable patients:

We know masks in healthcare stop the spread of airborne disease. We know they reduce the risk of hospital acquired COVID (which has a 10% mortality rate).

We know respirators work even better.

So why aren’t we masking? Why are patients having to bear the brunt of infection control?

Patients have been bearing the brunt of infection control in hospitals, having to go to great lengths to protect themselves and their loved ones.

They’re unfairly judged, psychologized and mistreated for masking and/or requesting staff mask.

Covid is still here. It’s still killing and disabling people. We’re also seeing outbreaks of tuberculosis, measles and the worst flu season in over a decade.

Public health is being systematically dismantled and gagged by the Trump administration, allowing misinformation and disinformation to flourish and putting even more lives at risk.

Why don’t we have mandatory masking in healthcare? Why are we killing and disabling patients who go there for help? Who can’t ‘just stay home’?

The second article in my Masks in Healthcare series looks at patient stories, retaliation, and what we can do to make hospitals safer for everyone.

The Disabled Ginger · We Need Mandatory Masking in Healthcare, and We Need it NowBy The Disabled Ginger

1 in 3 doctors in the NHS report being too tired to adequately care for their patients.

“Of the 69% who said extreme tiredness had or may have impaired their ability to treat patients, 1 in 4 said one of their patients had been harmed or a near miss had occurred”

I’ve learned to adapt to Covid risk in healthcare. I can wear a respirator and eye protection. I can monitor the CO2 levels. I can bring extra masks for healthcare workers. There are proactive things I can do to keep myself safe.

How can I protect myself against healthcare workers who are too tired or sick to do their jobs properly?

We need to talk about this more. Covid is known to cause cognitive damage. Many healthcare workers have been infected multiple times.

Those of us with complex chronic illness already know how hard it is to access safe, competent and timely care.

What will that care look like in another five years if we don’t start mitigating Covid?

The Guardian · One in three NHS doctors so tired their ability to treat patients is affected, survey findsBy Andrew Gregory

There are measles outbreaks in the U.S. and Canada. A disease we eradicated is making a comeback due to dangerous anti-vaxx rhetoric.

We need mandatory masking in healthcare, and we need it now.

A respirator protects against Covid, measles & more.

There’s no excuse to expose patients when we have the tools to prevent it:
