The #IntelArc #A310 looks like the card of choice but there appears to be no card with a proper fan design available right now. There is only a super noisy #Sparkle variant with a blower fan design with several reports on this specific card to have high fan noise and a terrible fan curve. Urgh.
So I looked at the alternative #A380 at pretty much the same price, which can be run at ~5W when idling. But there is a problem: Intel Arc cards drain 30-40W when there is no #ASMP enabled to allow the card to low power states: intel.com/content/www/us/en/su
Well, ASMP is only supported on newer hardware so I had to to check my mainboard (AMD B520 chip) for support. (2/?)

I was originally gonna get an Nvidia A2000 12gb or A4000 ada 20gb but it doesn't seem like the price has been dropping on them in ages.

Is anyone using the Intel B580 under Linux for AI work, specifically stable diffusion work? I'm hearing it's decent but haven't seen anything on Linux workloads or performance.

I know it'll be nice for Davinci Resolve. I'm not really a gamer. It's also half the price!

🤔 Oh, Chester Lam! 🎉 Thank you for enlightening us on the groundbreaking revelation that Intel’s Arc #B580 does, in fact, not defy basic geometry. A stunning exposé on how reading comprehension is still a crucial skill for tech journalists! 📚🤦‍♂️

Chips and Cheese · Raytracing on Intel’s Arc B580By Chester Lam

Bah. Looks like have hit the limits of the P400’s NVENC transcoder; hit rates below 1.00x for first time... it's put in a few years.

The P400 RAM usage is about 1 gb with 4 streams, but 100% on encode/decode. The P400 has 1 Pascal (6th gen) nvenc block and 2gb RAM.

Have an Arc A380 coming in now.

A380 should be able to handle quite a bit more, has two MFX engines (quicksync) & 6gb RAM.

Time will tell.

So picking up an #IntelArc A380 seemed like a good idea at the time to get a reasonably cheap, low-profile GPU with AV1 support that can run off bus power alone.

It seemed like a slam-dunk for my #HomeLab #Kubernetes cluster to be able run #DavinciResolve in a #Kubevirt VM and allow myself to edit my #YouTube videos with a bit more portability.

Unfortunately I didn't do my own research, and the consumer #Intel discrete GPUs don't play particularly nicely with virtualisation. Intel has seemingly intentionally gimped the consumer Arc cards by removing virtualisation support, while their data centre GPU line on almost identical silicon support it.

There's ways around all of that, which I *think* I've just about worked out, but the #Linux Intel drivers (i915) don't play particularly well with Linux guests either, which has given me a whole new set of challenges to solve.

All in all, it's be a fun three days, with I'm sure another fun three days of trial and error ahead.

The MSI Claw is the first handheld gaming PC with a 20W-30W Intel Meteor Lake processor featuring Arc graphics. But the Steam Deck with a 15W AMD RDNA 2 GPU still offers higher frame rates in many games, plus longer battery life. Intel driver updates may help, but Meteor Lake isn't off to a great start in the handheld space. buff.ly/4aldVbC #MSIClaw #IntelArc #MeteorLake #HandheldGamingPC
