BedastGPT<p>The enshittification of AI has lead to the choice of AI used by VLC to be groaned at. I even saw a post cross my feed of someone looking for a replacement for VLC.</p><p>VLC is working on on-device realtime captioning. This has nothing to do with generating images or video using AI. This has nothing to do with LLMs.</p><p>(edit: There's claims VLC is using a local LLM. It will use whisper.cpp, and not be using OpenAI's models. I don't know which models they will be using. I cannot find any reference to VLC using a LLM.)</p><p>While it would be preferred to use human generated captions for better accuracy, this is not always possible. This means a lot of video media is inaccessible to those with hearing impairment.</p><p>What VLC is doing is something that will contribute to accessibility in a big way.</p><p>AI transcription is still not perfect. It has its problems. But this is one of those things that we should be hoping to advance.</p><p>I'm not looking to replace humans in creating captions. I think we're very far from ever being able to do this correctly without humans. But as I said, there's a ton of video content that simply do not have captions available, human generated or not.</p><p>So long as they're not trying to manipulate the transcription using GenAI means, this is the wrong one to demonize.</p><p><a href="https://beige.party/tags/AI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AI</span></a> <a href="https://beige.party/tags/Transcription" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Transcription</span></a> <a href="https://beige.party/tags/VLC" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>VLC</span></a> <a href="https://beige.party/tags/HearingImpaired" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>HearingImpaired</span></a> <a href="https://beige.party/tags/Deaf" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Deaf</span></a> <a href="https://beige.party/tags/Accessibility" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Accessibility</span></a></p>

The "modern" way Hollywood does audio in its films, with dialogue mixed low, actors not speaking clearly in the first place, music or sound effects obliterating dialogue - is particularly galling to me because I have (significant) partial hearing loss. Older films I have no trouble picking up every word of the dialogue, but current films? It doesn't matter how far I crank the volume or otherwise manipulate audio settings, I'm still missing 20% or more of the dialogue entirely unless I turn on captions (which are a poor substitute as Lauren says).</p><p>I don't know who in the chain of filmmaking - sound mixer, director, producer, studio head? - encourages the current way of doing things, but I wish a few more of them would develop hearing impairments so they understood what they're imposing on us a little better.</p><p><a href="https://mindly.social/tags/hearing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>hearing</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/HearingImpaired" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>HearingImpaired</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/HearingLoss" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>HearingLoss</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/film" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>film</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/audio" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>audio</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/movie" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>movie</span></a></p>

Tech Singer<p>This is a weird request, but I figure the worst I can get for it is silence. I'm totally <a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/blind" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>blind</span></a> and have very bad hearing. To set up a device through its inaccessible software, I'm in need of a sighted person for about an hour and a half to two hours who can access a computer remotely, speaks and reads English, and can describe images and graphs. The person needs to be quite patient with follow-up questions, needs to be willing to repeat if needed, as well as be able to click on items and describe what happens on the screen. The person needs to be fairly detail oriented because some of the images appear to have arrows and other ways to expand them, according to the manual. Though I'm happy to be reasonable, I have no clue how much to offer as payment, this is my first request of this kind. I'm posting it because I know we have some blind people here who may be able to point me towards someone who has done this before and may be willing to do it for such a short period. Boosts welcome, indeed, they're appreciated. <a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/hearingimpaired" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>hearingimpaired</span></a> <a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/software" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>software</span></a> <a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/A11Y" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>A11Y</span></a> <a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/accessibility" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>accessibility</span></a> <a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/remote" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>remote</span></a></p>

Florian<p>The main example I know of are <a href="https://disabled.social/tags/audiogames" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>audiogames</span></a>, which are written for, and usually by, the <a href="https://disabled.social/tags/blind" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>blind</span></a>. These games do a lot of interesting stuff with <a href="https://disabled.social/tags/audio" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>audio</span></a> but generally forego the visual entirely, which makes them uninteresting for most others, unplayable for the <a href="https://disabled.social/tags/hearingImpaired" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>hearingImpaired</span></a>, and applicable to a very small market, which is also why that genre is stagnating and pretty much dying out.
