Obh, obh... cus uisge-beatha dhan t-sluagh? Taighean-staile à thall-thairis a-nis a' fàs nas motha. Agus Brexit, Ukraine, Trump uile a' dèanamh cuisean nas miosa.

Sorry to see the Isle of Harris Distillery in difficulties. Is the whisky bubble about to burst? Too many distillers and bottlers? Challenging conditions internationally too.

"For more than a decade, Kremlin agencies and their proxies have been pushing stories they believe will help undermine western democracies and promote the talking points of the Putin regime, especially on Ukraine. However, it is new to see this kind of content aimed at Scottish audiences in a minority language. So what is happening? Why do Russian propagandists have Gaelic speakers in their sights?"

[19:51] Lee Costello: Why GAA ripping up the All-Ireland group stages feels knee-jerk and makes zero sense

Gaelic football is in a really funny position right now as it continues to go through changes at a rapid pace, while still taking backward steps in the process.

Irish Independent · Lee Costello: Why GAA ripping up the All-Ireland group stages feels knee-jerk and makes zero senseBy Lee Costello

“An entire system of comharran – Gaelic navigational marks – surrounds the islands. Most are known only to the fishermen. […] A wealth of knowledge about the creatures which populate these fishing grounds is also encoded within the Gaelic language.”

Scottish place names are full of ghosts. They describe fields that are no longer there, forests long felled. Gaelic carries the memory of people, land, and place. When languages disappear, so does a part of our history and the ways of thinking they represent.

I wrote about it here:

By Hand · Scottish Gaelic - The Language Of The LandScottish place names are full of ghosts. They describe churches that are no longer there, forests long felled, rivers that have dried up or changed course. Gaelic carries the memory of people, land, and place. It’s one of the reasons I’ve spent the last 554 days learning it.

I wrote this article in 2015. This week a storm in Great Britain named Eowyn stirred a lot of online searches that led to a brief boost in traffic to this article.

Meanwhile, over in Great Britain itself, some Irish and Scottish news sites (who shall go unnamed) appear to have used some of my text (maybe with slight editing) to explain to their readers the etymology of the name.

After years of having my articles raped by YouTubers I guess I'm getting used to it, but it would have been nice if these media sites had provided links.
