In reality, it's a little more complicated because, unlike Mastodon, Friendica has a concept of threaded conversations. (No, seriously, Mastodon doesn't have it. Aw pride is a powerful thing. I'd like to think that I'm pretty zen and detached and successfully suppressing my ego... but when it comes to things I'm passionate about (read: tech, self-hosting) I cannot let things go. I had a very very sweet shout-out on a Fediverse podcast last week... but said shout-out mentioned my self-hosting issues and that maybe self-hosting isn't for everyone. I felt that I had to correct the record (even if the mention came with the nicest intention)... because I have ZERO issues self-hosting <a href="https://aseachange.com/tags/gotosocial" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#GoToSocial</a>, <a href="https://aseachange.com/tags/friendica" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Friendica</a> and <a href="https://aseachange.com/tags/pixelfed" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Pixelfed</a> (thanks to the magic of <a href="https://aseachange.com/tags/yunohost" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#YunoHost</a>). All my troubles had to do with <a href="https://aseachange.com/tags/ghost" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Ghost</a>. (And Ghost is wonderful, it's not related to it, just external circumstances). So, determined to defend my honor (ha!) on Friday I achieved the impossible: all by myself, following guides I found online, I managed to install <a href="https://aseachange.com/tags/apache" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Apache</a> and <a href="https://aseachange.com/tags/varnish" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Varnish</a> on my VPS and connected Varnish to Ghost. My site was already fast, now it's BLAZING fast. So I'm giving it another go, moving from Ghost (Pro) to my self-hosted Ghost installation. I turned off subscriptions on <a href="https://blog.elenarossini.com" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://blog.elenarossini.com</a>... next step is disconnecting the subdomain DNS (a CNAME record) from Ghost... and redirecting traffic to my new blog (<a href="https://news.elenarossini.com" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://news.elenarossini.com</a>). I know how to code things in NGINX for the redirect to work (I think, via guides I found online). My big question is: how do I tweak my old DNS records for <a href="https://blog.elenarossini.com" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://blog.elenarossini.com</a> so that NGINX on my self-hosted site <a href="https://news.elenarossini.com" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://news.elenarossini.com</a> will correctly pick up the traffic requests? Do I need to set up A and AAAA records for the subdomain blog to point to my VPS with the self-hosted Ghost blog? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! 🙏 Oh and I learned my lesson and - unlike last time - I am making big changes on a Monday morning, when I have the whole workweek ahead of me (instead of a Friday afternoon 1 hour before picking up my child from nursery school). That was when @<a class="" href="https://fediversity.site/channel/mikedev" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Mike Macgirvin 🖥️</a>'s <a href="https://codeberg.org/fortified/forte" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Forte</a>, created in mid-August of 2024 as a fork of his own <a href="https://codeberg.org/streams/streams" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">streams repository</a> and the latest member of a family of software that started in 2010 with Friendica, had its very first official stable release. And, in fact, Forte just uses ActivityPub to do something that (streams) and its predecessors all the way to the Red Matrix from 2012 (known as Hubzilla since 2015) have been doing using the Nomad protocol (formerly known as Zot). It's called <a href="https://joinfediverse.wiki/Nomadic_identity" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">nomadic identity</a>. This is technology that's over a dozen years old on software that was built around this technology from the get-go, only that it was recently ported to ActivityPub. Now, nomadic identity via ActivityPub was @<a href="https://mitra.social/users/silverpill" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">silverpill</a>'s idea. He wanted to make his <a href="https://codeberg.org/silverpill/mitra" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Mitra</a> nomadic. He started working in 2023. The first conversion of existing non-nomadic server software to nomadic still isn't fully done, much less officially rolled out as a stable release. If Mastodon actually wanted to implement nomadic identity, they would first have to wait until Mitra has a first stable nomadic release. Then they would have to wait until nomadic identity on Mitra (and between Mitra and Forte) has become stable and reliable under daily non-lab conditions. (Support for nomadic identity via ActivityPub on (streams) worked nicely under lab conditions. When it was rolled out to the release branch, and existing instances upgraded to it, it blew up in everyone's faces, and it took months for things to stabilise again.) Then they would have to look at how silverpill has done it and how Mike has done it. Then they would have to swallow their pride and decide to adopt technology that they can't present as their own original invention because it clearly isn't. And they would have to swallow their pride again and decide against making it incompatible with Mitra, Forte and (streams) just to make these three look broken and inferior to Mastodon. And only then they could actually start coding. Now look at how long silverpill has been working on rebuilding Mitra into something nomadic. This takes a whole lot of modifications because the concept of identity itself has to be thrown overboard and redefined because your account will no longer be your identity and vice versa. Alusta toimii hyvin sekä sovelluksena että selainsivuna. Ainakin mementomori.social-palvelimen kautta kirjauduttaessa selainversion tekstinkirjoituskenttä on tosin hassun pieni ja ahtautunut oikeaan laitaan, mutta sinänsä ajaa yhtä kaikki asiansa. Erityistä arvoa annan täällä väljälle merkkirajalle.Friendica on alkuun ollut vähän hankala sovelluksena, mutta selaimella toimii erinomaisesti ainakin käyttämäni katiska.social-palvelimen kautta. Tuntuvasti selkeämpi ja näppärämpi kuin viimeisin tapaamani Facebook-versio, joka oli etenkin selaimella käytettäessä tuhottoman raskaan näköinen kaikkine joutavine sälineen. Bluesky on sekin selkeä ja sielläkin on kätevä rakentaa itselleen mieleisiä syötteitä esimerkiksi kirja- ja juoksusisällöistä ynnä seurattaviensa touhuista. 300 merkin raja kuitenkin ärsyttää tuhottomasti eikä minulla ole sen käyttöön varsinaisesti muuta tolkullista motiivia kuin säilyttää yhteys muutamiin Metan alustoilta tuttuihin, jotka eivät ole vielä asettuneet taloksi näille main. En tiedä, moniko on ylipäänsä tehnyt siirtymäratkaisunsa minun tapaani muista kuin päivänpoliittisista syistä. Tuntuu, että ainakin osa on vielä horroksessa tai jumissa Metan pidemmän aikavälin kehityskulkujen kanssa ja luulee tätä poismuuttoliikehdintää pelkäksi marginaalisen vasemmistolaisporukan ohimeneväksi Musk-paniikiksi.Onhan tämä sinänsä lystiä olla kerrankin edelläkävijä omissa piireissäni, ei siinä mitään. I never could get <a href="https://mastodon.myocci.social/tags/Bookwyrm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Bookwyrm</a> to install. And currently I am trying out <a href="https://mastodon.myocci.social/tags/diaspora" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#diaspora</a>. One thing I think all of them lack is interconnectability. I like <a href="https://mastodon.myocci.social/tags/Mastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Mastodon</a> because you can connect and use relays to help connect to other instances. If there is a way to do it with any of the above, I have never figured it out. If you have any tips or suggestions, I am all ears!
