Guy LeCharles Gonzalez<p>2025 Book 25: Parable of the Sower: A Graphic Novel Adaptation by Octavia E. Butler, Damian Duffy, John Jennings</p><p>An impressive adaptation that's more accessible than Butler's novel in all the right ways, as Duffy takes full advantage of Jennings' ability to add nuance to every panel. It might be blasphemy, but I loved this more than the original novel.</p><p><a href="https://gardenstate.social/tags/comics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>comics</span></a> <a href="https://gardenstate.social/tags/bookstodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>bookstodon</span></a> <a href="https://gardenstate.social/tags/FridayReads" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>FridayReads</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://bookshop.org/a/100022/9781419754050" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">bookshop.org/a/100022/97814197</span><span class="invisible">54050</span></a></p>

Guy LeCharles Gonzalez<p>2025 Book 23: Strange Fruit, Volume I: Uncelebrated Narratives from Black History by Joel Christian Gill </p><p>An uneven mix of vignettes spotlighting a range of notable individuals (all men) that does a great job of sparking interest in learning more about each of them, with a solid bibliography to help focus that interest. Gill's artwork and varied layouts add a lot of nuance and depth to the deceptively simple narratives.</p><p><a href="https://gardenstate.social/tags/comics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>comics</span></a> <a href="https://gardenstate.social/tags/bookstodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>bookstodon</span></a> <a href="https://gardenstate.social/tags/FridayReads" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>FridayReads</span></a></p><p><a href="https://bookshop.org/a/100022/9781938486296" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">bookshop.org/a/100022/97819384</span><span class="invisible">86296</span></a></p>

Guy LeCharles Gonzalez<p>2025 Book 16: The Memory Librarian and Other Stories of Dirty Computer by Janelle Monáe, et al</p><p>I picked this up looking for something cyberpunk-ish and got something very different instead! Each vignette gives just a glimpse of Monae's dystopian setting, but the focus is always on the people living in it, and how they survive. Left me intrigued and wanting more.</p><p><a href="https://gardenstate.social/tags/bookstodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>bookstodon</span></a> <a href="https://gardenstate.social/tags/FridayReads" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>FridayReads</span></a></p><p><a href="https://bookshop.org/a/100022/9780063070882" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">bookshop.org/a/100022/97800630</span><span class="invisible">70882</span></a></p>

Guy LeCharles Gonzalez<p>2025 Book 2: Clock Striker, Volume 2: The Sharing Society by Frederick L. Jones, Issaka Galadima</p><p>A little darker than I remember the first volume being, but also fun and engaging. Guy LeCharles Gonzalez<p>2025 Book 1: 12 Days by June Kim</p><p>Re-reading the first manga I ever read back in 2006. A suitably messy slice of life told in vignettes weaving past and present, as several characters grapple with the untimely death of a loved one. The drinking ashes hook is both literal and metaphorical, but the heart of the story is what's said, and not said, throughout. Holds up well.</p><p><a href="https://gardenstate.social/tags/bookstodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>bookstodon</span></a> <a href="https://gardenstate.social/tags/FridayReads" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>FridayReads</span></a> <a href="https://gardenstate.social/tags/manga" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>manga</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://tokyopop.com/products/9781598166910_12-days" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">tokyopop.com/products/97815981</span><span class="invisible">66910_12-days</span></a></p>
