#FOMO is less about missing fun events and more about missing the opportunity to emotionally connect with people.
But reflecting on past positive social interactions can help alleviate that feeling of missing out, according to marketing professors and social psychologists https://buff.ly/5hP0mvo
Why am I not getting added to random signal groupchats

ICYMI, my thoughts on the relentless marketing cycles for fountain pen retailers and how gamification strategies are being used to drive purchasing and engagement:

Time for #SXSW #FOMO to kick in, esp with the Fediverse house this year! https://about.flipboard.com/fediverse-house/
Give attendees experiences, not things, at your events. Doing so fosters connection between participants and motivates FOMO.
I see a lot of FOSS orgs jumping to find SOME way to shoe-horn in #AI / #LLM, and it's primarily NOT FOR THE WANT OF ANY KIND OF VIRTUE/feature brought by the AI, but mere #FOMO.
Guys, WHAT.
You are OPEN SOURCE ORGANIZATIONS.
You are the VANGUARD of restoring and defining what is GOOD in the digital realm.
And you're playing AI games out of FOMO? Out of a fear of seeming out of touch with whatever is NEW (never mind the fact that 90% of what is NEW is shitty rapine, marketed by soulless snake-oil salesman).
SERIOUSLY?!?
Do better.
Some questions for those of you on a #mastodon instance with full-text search enabled:
1. How often do you use it?
2. What do you use it for?
3. Does it offer something above being able to search for hashtags?
I don’t have it enabled at the moment, but I’m suffering from #FOMO. However, I’d have to beef up the VPS for my #singleuserinstance to enable full-text search and I’m not sure it’s worth it?

You had to be there. Sometimes that's not such a bad thing.

Quite high #FOMO this week, as colleagues are at the Aussietron running tree cores through the XFM for Casey Ryan's PhD! Looking forward to hearing all about it/wishing I could be there :)
I just left the #Whatsapp group I shared with my neighbors, overcoming the #FOMO and - after a previous #announcement 2 weeks ago with a lot of background information - left a final goodbye with a strong #nudge to get informed on the rationale of my 'silly utile' behavior. BUT as us #fedizens know..
one dime +

FOSDEM weekend has already started
The "Fear Of Missing Out" is already high so I think I'll mute the FOSDEM hashtag for a while and coin the acronym FOMOOF (Fear Of Missing Out On FOSDEM)
I'll read all the news next week.
Happy FOSDEM to all

Been for a walk, eaten my lunch and now suffering from a strange online #FOMO. Reading toots from others saying the same - needing to work, being drawn into chats. I feel like we are all reaching out for a little reassurance today. If you need some hugs, then hugs and if you need spoons
then spoons
are for you.

I understand the reason behind the longing for algorithms is #fomo. However, according to Zipf's law, only few posts get very popular in terms of interactions, while posts basically get stars proportionally to their boosts. That is, the posts that an algorithm would rank up, are boosted by users anyway.
So if you see a boosted post you likely see a popular one. Also, navigate to the explore tab of any instance; it already ranks all posts from their global TL (unlimited list.) For special interest, just follow special accounts.
#fomo might also result from the fact that most popular content on the fediverse doesn't really compare to that of other platforms (in terms of agressiveness, etc.)
Maybe the advanced rankings of https://lemmy.ml better fit the needs of an occasional reader?
