I really enjoyed this ChessDojo interview with chess teacher Elizabeth Spiegel (of Brooklyn Castle fame) about her experience with scholastic chess and teaching in NYC public schools.
The new Alberta Education Act requires BOTH parent approval AND the approval of the UCP's Minister of Education, Demetrios Nicolaides, before children are allowed to know the existence of queers, including some of their classmates.
Except for "religious education". And who gets to decide which religious education is exempted? None other than the UCP's Minister of Education, Demetrios Nicolaides.
This supposedly supports "transparency and student success" by censoring knowledge and diversity, while threatening certain kids with the ignorance of others.
To help support this act, there are now over 200 books banned from school libraries, all books banned from teacher classrooms (to be vetted by the government), for introducing kids to diverse views. Some of these banned books are still in the curriculum as mandatory reading.
These lists are created by "Parents Rights" groups, aka Evangelical Activists... even though the Government of Alberta polled us all and we overwhelmingly told them that teachers and educators should be making these decisions, NOT the government (or the government's activist groups). What we say makes no difference to this authoritarian government.
Remove the censorship, and let EDUCATORS decide educational content, and let PEOPLE have autonomy to make their own decisions about themselves.
