Seventeen coastguards have been charged by a Greek naval court over the deadliest migrant boat disaster in the Mediterranean Sea for a decade.
Up to 650 people were feared to have drowned when the overcrowded Adriana fishing vessel sank near Pylos, off the Greek coast, in the early hours of 14 June 2023.

The U.S. Coast Guard’s payroll system suffered a data breach, with bi-weekly pay for 1,135 members of the service impacted and delayed as a result.
The Coast Guard said that it took its personnel and payroll system offline to help address security. The breach impacted service members’ direct deposit account routing information, and was discovered after unusual activity was reported. The news was first reported by journalist Marisa Kabas. Task & Purpose confirmed the breach with the Coast Guard on Friday.
The Coast Guard Pay and Personnel Center’s Direct Access service is down for “unscheduled maintenance” as a result of the breach and will not be restored until Feb. 19, according to an email sent out to Coast Guard personnel.

#Carmanah Point #LightStation was established in 1891. The first #lighthouse there was built of wood & attached to the keeper's housing. The present tower was built in 1920 of concrete & remains in operation. The area is said to be named for the upstream #Nitinaht village. It is said the name means "thus far upstream".
In Summer 2024, #Canadian Fisheries & Oceans along with the #CoastGuard announced that the light station was seismically unstable & would be destaffed before the end of the year. On Oct. 25, lightkeepers were removed from the station. The decision to destaff the station has been met with heavy criticism from various local authorities, including local governments, indigenous leadership & industry leaders.
