Speaking as a former child… (shocking, I know!), my #MentalHealth suffered plenty from IRL bullying, including on sports fields. PLEASE don’t make the vulnerable kids go there!

And yes, I am an Old™, so “social media” was not yet quite a thing when I was a kid - and despite having a computer from age 13, modems & phone calls & BBSes (oh my!) weren’t affordable or maybe even available where I lived (suburban MEL). Being terminally online probably wasn’t actually part of my life until my very early 20s, but when I finally did get online it provided this awkward, shy, #queer young woman with more support, information, access to resources, and [companion|friend]ship than I ever managed to find in meatspace. 🥹

Rather than pouring resources into support, education, and training kids AND THEIR PARENTS (many of whom were also kids who had access to social media growing up!) to navigate the digital world that is now inextricably intertwined with the physical one, politicians love a quick fix - except of course the ‘fix’ proposed here is neither quick (nor cheap!) nor will actually fix the problem (kids are wizards at circumventing restrictions, I hope parents have noticed 🤪). And it will inevitably ‘require’ introduction of an “insert government ID token to access perfectly legal resources” that reduces the privacy of all Aussies (including kids! but also adults) and normalises the ever-increasing creep of the #SurveillanceState.

But “We must do something!” and “this is something” so… ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
