79th read of 2025:
The Second Safest Mountain by Otava Heikkilä
Heikkilä writes an incredibly deceptively simple story. This is about religious oppression through the gender binary and women (afab people) being at the disposal of a male god, who also maybe destroys their world, and the one person who wants more in their life.
This is a fantasy horror, so Heikkilä doesn’t bring our world politics into it, but he does carve out other ways of expression and connection.
The art is stunning. The use of space and color is breathtaking, and like the story, deceptively simple. But the art does as much of the storytelling as the narrative does. I cannot recommend this enough, especially for those who are seeking stories of how to do something different when faced with the worst odds and how community plays a critical role in keeping you in and getting you out.
